Why do old people hate new music?

As I’ve grown older, I’ll often hear people my age say things like “they just don’t make good music like they used to.”

Why does this happen?

Luckily, my background as a psychologist has given me some insights into this puzzle.

We know that musical tastes begin to crystallize as early as age 13 or 14. By the time we’re in our early 20s, these tastes get locked into place pretty firmly.

In fact, studies have found that by the time we turn 33, most of us have stopped listening to new music. Meanwhile, popular songs released when you’re in your early teens are likely to remain quite popular among your age group for the rest of your life.

The Beatles.

Didn’t like ‘em 60 years ago, don’t like ‘em now.

This is a deep subject intimately tied to everyone's life experiences and tastes (or lack of). As a feral foster kid my wards thought making me take classical piano lessons was a wise move. They were right and wrong.

Right as it made my forming mind take in the brilliance of the classical composers without understanding math and order was the driving force of their works. The bands Rush and Metallica are primary examples of modern musicians who took that ball and ran with it. The Beatles, Electric Light Orchestra, Allen Parson's Project and so many others also rose above most of their peers by learning from the masters. Then there's Zeppelin, Clapton, Stones and such who got most of their material from American Blues musicians who in turn got their inspirations from regional folk which mostly came from Europe which was...Classical.

The wrong is that I can not appreciate the bastardization passing as "music" called rap and hip hop. Bad poetry set to a beat is not music without melody or structure. It's quite ironic one of the few people doing this on a higher level lending it actual legitimacy happens to be a white man surpassing blacks at their own game - M&M, who himself is now considered a fogey by today's youth who think a voice not distorted through a processor is archaic.

But consider this enduring mystery: musical talent often finds itself most concentrated in the least intellectual people. Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, James Brown...no insult intended but you wouldn't want those guys standing over you before heart surgery saying they spent the night at a specific hotel.

I've flowed with the times over five decades now enjoying good music where I find it (Korn and System of a Down stand out taking the flag and running with it). Being actually old at the mercy of a top-25 country station loving friend who totes me everywhere while torturing me with that crap...jeez.

Nearly 100 years of country music and these greedy bastards play 25 of what sells in a loop? The classic rock station isn't much better - I think they don't have 500 songs in there. Sad world we have where profit overrules real inspiration, erasing that art in the overall public mind.

Disagree. You’re looking for bias confirmation! lol I don’t like it either, but they love their music just like every generation before and the reasons for that are in the article (at least I agree with the guy).

huh? Don’t be triggered. Elton John has wisely partnered with a few of the younger artists to reach new audiences. More people should do the same.

I don’t hate new music. I just prefer music from the ‘70s.

The 1770s.
