As I’ve argued before, the two key events giving rise to the Great Awokening (the sudden increase in woke sentiment beginning in around 2012) were the launch of social media and the Occupy Wall Street protests. These two events led to the formation of a bootlegger-baptist coalition, with social-media activists as the self-righteous baptists, and woke corporations as the self-serving bootleggers. This woke coalition then proceeded to engineer the most rapid cultural shift in recent history.
However, those two events didn’t occur in a vacuum. While they may explain the timing of the Great Awokening – why did it get going in around 2012? – they aren’t sufficient to explain its origins. Indeed, there are several contextual factors without which the Great Awokening might never have happened. One is the legal regime instigated by the Civil Rights Act – something Richard Hanania has written about in detail. And another is the massive leftward shift of academia: the increase in the proportion of academics with left-wing views, and the corresponding rise of Grievance Studies.
The best illustration of academia’s leftward shift is this chart, which shows the proportion of US academics identifying as “Far left/liberal” and “Far right/conservative” from 1989–90 to 2013–14. All the data come from the same long-running survey, so there can be little doubt that the shift is real, as opposed to being due to changes in methodology. As the chart’s creator, Sam Abrams, notes, “The data is comparable and responsibly collected over a long period of time.” (Though I’m not aware of any more recent data, it’s plausible that the dark blue line is now even higher.)
I suspect that most of academia’s leftward shift was due to self-reinforcing processes: social homophily (conservatives not wanting to enter a profession where there aren’t many conservatives); political typing

My little lady in the kitchen cookin’ breakfast causes a-wokeness.
Academia has been polluted for decades now
Try “God and Man at Yale”.
Well, women in voting caused socialism and unrestrained spending...so, there’s that...
Oh please, I had so many “woke” male professors in collage it’s hard to believe women made it worse.
All I know is, everyone but me is to blame for everything.
So, I’m off the hook and y’all are in trouble.
Columbia University was and is a hotbed of communism.
In 1909 CE Ruthenberg received his law degree from Columbia. This was eight years before Lenin’s Bolshevik Revolution established with world’s first Communist nation, and ten years before Lenin’s government established the Communist International. (The Communist International, or “Comintern,” was the network of subordinate Communist parties the Soviet Union established in foreign countries, for purposes of subversion.) Having no Communist party to join, Ruthenberg became active in the Socialist Party USA.Then there was the massive influx of "Frankfurt School" protégés in the 1930s at Columbia University and across the USA.In 1919, upon the establishment of Comintern, Ruthenberg became a leader of one of the two or three different American Communist parties vying for Russian recognition and support. The Russians forced the rival parties to merge in 1922, under the name Communist Party of the United States of America (CPUSA). Ruthenberg was the first Executive Secretary of the CPUSA, a position he would hold until his death in 1927. After his death, Ruthenberg’s body was cremated, and an urn containing his ashes was placed in the Kremlin wall in Moscow.
From the Institute in Frankfurt, and later in New York, these cultural revolutionaries would promote feminism, communism, atheism, mass migration, globalism, humanism, multiculturalism, nihilism, hedonism, environmentalism, and all sorts of other “isms” that tended to undermine individual liberty, traditional culture, and morality. The "David Horowitz Freedom Center" publishes the outstanding "Discover the Networks" database of leftist subversive groups and their agendas....crucial assistance from socialist and humanist “education reformer” John Dewey and his disciples, these characters attached themselves to Columbia University’s important Teachers College in 1934. Dewey had been a leading “philosopher” and “educator” at Columbia, retiring just a few years before the Frankfurt School influx was in full swing. Others settled at Berkeley, Princeton, and Brandeis.
With Rockefeller money, Dewey would play a key role in helping the Frankfurt School’s operatives put down roots in America.
This anti-American beast is staggeringly large, highly networked, and highly distributed.
Oh my no, although the author makes a good point when he identifies the nature of the source in self-reinforcing homophily. But no, although the feminists have taken a wrecking ball to their era of academic politics (and very thoroughly, including academic and intellectual standards that have buried the real gems of scholarship within the field in an enormous pile of tendentious refuse), this silly-ass dance was spiraling merrily well before the ladies cut in. Playpens produce nothing but tantrums and poo.
When they were given the right to vote is when it all really started.
Our historical and continuing connections to Europe have planted and watered the seeds to allow the germination of socialism and communism in the US. The role of the universities cannot be underestimated. They look down and despise the working classes while pretending to be concerned about their welfare.
Another hotbed of socialism is Christianity. In my reading of a number of different American history books over the past couple of years, I took notice how many of the socialist / communists for over 150 years were born into and grew up in Christian missionary families. They seem to experience something in mission work that made them turn away from religion and towards givernment as the means to “help” people. Socialism / communism is the system to “help” because capitalism is not a welfare system. The US is not a capitalist country today.
I also observe that the feminizing American culture and society since the 1960s have also helped move things away from its remnants of capitalism further toward fuller embrace of socialism / communism.
Same here and that goes back even to the 70’s and 80’s before there were a lot of women profs.
Lots of men just like to blame shift all the world’s ills onto women, as if a world run by men wouldn’t have them.
communists/liberals of both genders did
communists because they knew it would weaken the country
liberals because they adopted whatever pet causes that appealed to them and forced them on everyone
That’s a very interesting perspective about the role of Christianity and missionaries in particular in fostering communism and socialism. Many churches and synods turned radically leftward in the 60s. The current Catholic Pope is the most egregious case.
The radical feminists starting in the 60s snared many women in the march to communism and socialism.
It is absolutely appalling the number of people who believe that tyrannical and dictatorial governments are benevolent and working for the peoples’ welfare. They have one thing in common — they are all completely ignorant of history and basic human nature.
Have you ever seen female professors in academe? Woof. Woof. Limbaugh one said that politics is the home for ugly women. He never spent time in academe.
Well, the Bible says that Eve sinned first, soo...........
Lol!

If you read American history books, look into the background of some of the people. You will see this thread between their Christian missionary roots and them arriving at socialism.
As far as the pope, he is a Jesuit and a Latin American. More Jesuits than not seem to be leftist politically. I knew a young bright man, Ivy grad, including Harvard law, conservative politically, and very traditional Catholic. He thought he had a vocation to be a priest. Approached the Jesuits - they would not even let him “try it out”, told him to look elsewhere.
As far as Latin Americans, the highly educated classes there are more often than not are very anti-American. My first exposure to this was a professor in grad school; we would talk politics outside of class. Absolutely hated Reagan with a passion and saw Brezhnev and Gorbachev as practical men, peacemakers. Hated the 2nd Amendment, and did not think certain opinions should be part of the public dialog. Noticed subsequently how social-class conscious the educated LA were, as well as not liking people from other LA countries.
You are right - They have one thing in common — they are all completely ignorant of history and human nature. Some actual know the history, but they refuse to accept that it happened the way it was written.
