We must engage our allies—NATO, India, Japan, Australia, and as many other nations as are willing to join in, to make the following proclamation to China: “ If you attack Taiwan, we, collectively, will freeze (perhaps confiscate) all Chinese assets in our territories as well as sever all trade with China.”
Please note that the virtue of this plan is that neither side needs to fire a shot in this confrontation. Thus, no lives or treasure need to be lost.

I’m pretty sure the current administration is going to try to ride it out without making anybody mad (except the American people). They want to punt so a future administration, probably Republican, can get the blame for the foreign policy failure here.
The writer is of the mind that the Biden Administration would actually try and aid Taiwan.
They won’t.
They want Taiwan assimilated into COMMUNIST CHINA.

Just tell the Chinese that we will mine the inner island chain and will interdict all commercial shipping into China.

This has the feel of the world in the early 1930s, according to what I’ve seen in documentaries and read. The nations of the world are self absorbed, but one nation is aggressively making threats.
When China moves on Taiwan, the world will be shocked and outraged. Maybe then Joe can negotiate peace in our time.
Meanwhile, he does a virtual meet with Master Xi to get his marching orders and perhaps make some concessions.
I understand the Chicoms just issued a threat to Australia if they take Taiwan’s side in a fight.
Now, why would they say that?
I have a sinking feeling in my gut that in the future, this is going to be an historic event, and there will be books written on it describing how Communist China was letting everyone know exactly what they intended to do, and nobody did anything to stop them until it was too late...and the world descended into a hot war.

It’s not a bad idea, in theory. But as you noted DS, promises made will be promises broken. And I’d predict that the first nation to break its promise would be the United States.

Look like Russia and China are together to start, expect Russia will jump into Ukraine and more of Europe, and China will attack Taiwan, to crush our economy in the Asian theater..two front war in proxy, in the mean time blm, Iran, nork has infiltrated with military forces will begin attacks in the Usa..it’s not good and Americans are holding their homes, but the war is now in the streets..come Lord
The only real deterrent to a Chinese invasion of Taiwan are the people of Taiwan. If they are willing to fight hard to preserve their freedom, liberty and way of life, it is not certain that a Chinese invasion would succeed. China has a huge military. However it features much locally manufactured untested equipment and the vast majority of its soldiers and officers have little or no combat or tactical experience. If such an invasion were to fail and the Chinese suffer huge casualties, Xi and his supporters would be deposed and there very well could be a military coup against the corrupt communist government. Doubt there will be an attack despite the bellicose talk.

Yes, indeed. Back then we had Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan making the threats. Today it’s China and radical Islam. And like before, most folks don’t see the danger.
The only difference is that back then Churchill came after Chamberlain. And Churchill saved the day. But our Churchill (Trump) came first, followed by our Chamberlain (Biden). That’s not the order you’d want.
We won’t do a thing. Look what we did in Afghanistan. We didn’t walk away, we ran away. The Chinese know we won’t do anything. And if we did, we’d lose. Afghanistan was the worst diplomatic blunder in living memory. And it emboldened China.
Honestly.... I don’t care. In fact, I don’t want us meddling across the globe any longer. we have much much bigger issues to deal with here,
Babbling biden isn’t going to do anything to anger the people who got him elected.
Any attempt by China to take over Taiwan would be very expensive to China. Taiwan is a small country with a population of 23 million. Taiwan has a first world economy and a first world military. Would China attempt to bomb them back to the stone age? Very wasteful. Would they invade? How many troops would they send. Most of the adult male population of Taiwan has had some military training and they have lots of guns. Most of the rest of the civilized world, even if they didn’t offer military support, would shun China. What would the great cost of taking do to China’s economy? Would a billion or so Chinese presents accept the economic suffering?
NATO is not a factor. The largest Euro navies, France and England, are quite small with 20 maybe destroyers and frigates each. A few submarines. Nothing that would cause China to do more than chuckle.
Why must we do that?
