got one for .39 cents yesterday. Big one.
Barely got it in the freezer.
Publix house brand Turkey is the one I buy anyhow because it’s the best tasting... Good for Publix - where shopping is a pleasure.
Aldi has them for $.87/lb....but the suppler still hasn’t produced them. It’ll happen. In the meantime Aldi has hams for $1.49/lb...and will make a couple kettles of split pea soup and freeze.
in 1993 I was medical officer for one of the ongoing Joint Task Force missions for MIA-POW recovery in Cambodia.
This trip happened to go through Thanksgiving.
Someone had arranged to bring in Turkeys so we could celebrate properly.
Turkey, served up SE Asian style, it was seasoned right (and all the trimmings and stuffing and everything else you’d expect except candied yams which some would consider a blessing not a curse), and cut up like any good piece of fowl might be with a cleaver: randomly, with lots of bone splinters and it was some of the best turkey I’ve ever had.
I did get a good look at the packaging as they had been flown in specially packed in dry ice from which military station I don’t recall, but I DO RECALL the packaging date which was 1962.
I remember having some laughs with the pilots (blackhawks) over us being flown over to Thailand in C5A galaxy jets that were as old as the turkeys they sent us for dinner.
When the SHTF, some quartermaster groups at an (several) Air Base or Army forts are going to be sitting on food stores worth more than their weight in gold - how come I’ve never seen this plot device in any dystopian science fiction story? (Walmart warehouse, yes, but not this specific bit)
3 frozen turkeys, cheap protein. Stock up in freezer
IMHO - takes up way too much valuable space. Think 3 beach balls in a square box.
Turkey breast portions a better storage value.
But anyway, I’m not a fan of the Rat Bird.
Now, if you sock away wild-caught Alaskan salmon, you get way more protein per square metre of storage space.
Yep they had that deal yesterday at my Kroger also. I’m holding out for a fresh turkey like I get every year. Worst case scenario I guess we’ll serve duck with dressing and gravy. 😏
It is 39 cents per pound at the Giant in northern Virginia.
I have a 20lb in the oven as we speak. It’s just the 2 of us so I cook it up and then freeze in individual bags so it takes up less room. Still waiting on a good chicken sale. Anyways, I love turkey and gravy sandwich. And there is nothing like it on a cold Wisconsin morning.
Don’t live near a Publix. Wish I did.
AL No, thanks, Peg. I'm still pleasantly nauseous from last night's feast of the three-legged chicken. Why would you buy a chicken with three drumsticks?
PEGGY Well, it cost seven cents a pound. The ones with two legs cost a dollar nineteen a pound. Excuse me for thinking about our bankbook instead of our health.
AL Didn't you think just maybe there might be something wrong when the label said Chernobyl Farms? I mean, how many chickens have flippers?
PEGGY Don't blame me for that. I thought it was just an extra head. Bud, you liked it, didn't you?
BUD It was tasty, but hard to eat. Everytime I cut off a piece it would grow back.
AL Can somebody get Kelly out of the bathroom? I'm a little queasy. I'm still trying to pass a beak.
Harris Teeter (Virginia) has turkeys on sale for $0.37/lb this weekend as long as you purchase $40 worth of other groceries. Picked up a 20lb one yesterday.
I’m paying over $100 for my turkey this year. Either I’m doing something wrong or I’m getting one hell of a good turkey.
I bought two twenty + pounders and ground them up with some spices and raw bacon for turkey breakfast sausage. Ours locally are .33 a pound thus week. No minimum grocery purchase required, limit 2. We get a fresh local bird for our thanksgiving meal.
That’s nothing. Well, something. Too much something!
Tom Thumb/Albertsons gives you a turkey free when you buy $100 in other groceries, easy to do buying the normal weekly shopping, or stock up on sale/clearance bulk stuff. Easy to hit $100 for a ‘free’ turkey!
