Apparently many of the minors coming across the border are being brought in by 'sex traffickers' - the adults accompanying the children are not their parents. Given the general lack of documents/ID, law enforcement may separate the adults to protect the children. Any parents who wish to enter the country without being separated from their children, should probably consider entering via legal immigration or tourist processes/pathways...
