Besides which, the assailant was much bigger and so full of anger he may have been on something and would probably have killed the male companion. I would probably have shot the dude, but then I don't live in the hellhole that is NYC and I would never have said anything to him to start with.
In this instance, it was a no-win situation and the man and woman did the right thing. Sometimes a tactical retreat is called for.
I experienced the exact opposite in public school in Wilmington DE.
