Incidents of academics being targeted for their views are on the rise, according to a new report by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE). FIRE notes that the number of targeting cases has sharply increased from 24 incidents in 2015 to 113 in 2020. Unfortunately, that trend doesn’t appear to be slowing down in 2021.
But one professor at North Carolina State University has decided to push back. Stephen Porter is a professor in the College of Education, where he teaches graduate courses in statistics, causal inference, and workflow of data analysis. A conservative, Porter claims that university officials retaliated against him for expressing his views and has filed a lawsuit against the university.
The Martin Center recently spoke with Porter about the lawsuit he filed against NC State. His attorney, Samantha Harris, also participated in the interview. Harris previously worked at FIRE and now runs her own law firm. This transcription has been edited for clarity and length.

Diversity is our strength.
Oh, only in the way people LOOK. Diversity of thought is verboten.
Does the Martin Center label Leftist professors as “liberal”? Shame on them if they don’t.
Why does nobody say it correctly, i. e., “Death by a thousand PAPER cuts”?
“Death by a Thousand Cuts” was the name of a particularly gruesome method of execution in China a couple centuries ago.
Terrible to hear things have gone this way at NC State. I was a student there 20 years ago. While it certainly had its share of liberal professors, the student body seemed to lean to the right, if anything. I was certainly not shy about my political views in the classroom or in my writing, and it was never a problem with anyone on the faculty. Probably my most left-wing professor, with whom I probably had the most political agreements, later happily wrote me a letter of recommendation for law school.
NC really turning Blue, terrible.

Mixed emotions ... I hated statistics class ...
Just read Frederick Bastiats 1850 book, “The Law”, and came to the sad realization the we have been a socialist country since the 1930s. Just LESS socialist than the USSR and Germany. We are now simply in the final horrible last implementation of Plato’s (Socialist) Republic
It’s time for all educators who reject current wokeness to quit and start their own schools (primary, secondary, and advanced). Got at least 45 million who will go or send their kids. Time to leave the idiots behind. That is a lot of clout and money involved.
If student vouchers existed the free market would provide those schools in an instant.
Compare and contrast:
Why is NC turning blue? Because it is so close to DC?
Atlanta syndrome
