This isn’t a hard and fast rule. There are exceptions. But if you look around, for the most part, you’ll find that the scions of the successful are almost always bad news—nothing like their self-made parents. In fact, many of these scions are straight-up sociopaths—which brings me to the Cuomo brothers, Andrew and Fredo.
Andrew and Fredo are the sons of the late Mario Cuomo, who epitomized what it means to be a self-made man in America.
Born in 1932 to a family of grocers, Mario attended public schools, enjoyed a brief professional baseball career, attended college and then law school, jumped into politics, and enjoyed three terms as New York’s governor after serving as mayor of New York.
You don’t get any more self-made than that.
While I had my political differences with Mario, he always seemed like a pretty decent human being. Married to the same woman for 60 years, no big scandals, etc. In other words, I’d never vote for him, but I wouldn’t mind if he took my sister out.
But the two sociopaths he spawned… Man alive.

Cuomo ran for mayor in 1977. It was Andrew’s first foray into the sleazy world of NY politics. He hired a goon squad to drive through the “good” neighborhoods in the surrounding boroughs shouting through bullhorns to VOTE FOR CUOMO NOT THE HOMO. They pulled the same stunt in 1986 when Koch ran against Cuomo in the Den primary for Gov. Other than their mother, Matilda Cuomo this family is detestable to say the least
Stereotypes never spring from thin air.
Ah, the joy of finding another Bob Grant fan. I do miss him terribly.
And, yes, Mario was a scumbag...just not as much as Fredo and Fredo’s older brother.
Yeah. Robert Ciro Gigante better know as Bob Grant, knew a Sfachime when he saw one.
Bob Grant’s show originally aired on WMCA in 1970 when they ended their Top40 format. The odds were stacked against him, a conservative talk show host in the NYC market wouldn’t have a chance, so they thought. elRushbo, in his first book credits Bob Grant’s pioneering work and persistence as one reason for his own success.
The apples don’t fall far from the tree. I disagree with the author. Mario was a dirtbag who thought he was pope rather than merely a terrible governor. Three terms of running the state into the ground while sanctimoniously declaring his virtue, of which he had little. End the bloodline. The whole family sucks.
Didn’t Mario want to take photos of license plates of drivers who shopped in NJ to avoid paying NY taxes?
Yep! When we lived in Rockland County there was talk of having local police and Troopers parked alongside the main roads at the state line with cameras. I remember as a kid my mom dragging us to the old Alexander’s in Paramus for new school clothes which weren’t taxed in NJ
