“We Bury the Ashes of Racism, Discrimination and Stereotypes”: Canadian Schools Hold Book Burning Demonstration to be a More “Inclusive Country”

We recently discussed how many on the left have discovered the allure of book burning, book banning, and blacklisting of authors. While expressing shock at ISIS and other extremist groups burning books, the practice appears acceptable based on the titles or content. Now educators in Ontario have held a “flame purification ceremony” for the local indigenous population by burning roughly 5,000 books.

The notion of teachers burning books is almost as bizarre as the thought of book sellers embracing blacklisting but both are now part of the realities of our age of rage. These school officials actually videotaped the celebration of book burning for students at 30 schools with the announcement that “We bury the ashes of racism, discrimination and stereotypes in the hope that we will grow up in an inclusive country where all can live in prosperity and security.”
The announcement even has a type of Maoist cultural revolution feel to it. In addition, Lyne Cosette, a spokeswoman for the public French-speaking Catholic schools of Ontario, told the National Post newspaper, “Symbolically, some books were used as fertilizer.” The entire demonstration was a disgrace to educators everywhere. The lesson of book burning left with these children will likely be indelible and lasting. I have worried about the rise of a generation of censors but the Catholic schools of Ontario appear intent on raising a generation of book burners.

No administrators or teachers were fired for teaching thousands of kids to be book burners. While other Canadians have voiced their disgust, there is no indication from the Catholic schools that such individuals are fundamentally unsuited to teach children. I would defend any one of them who sought to burn books or flags as a form of free speech despite my disgust for such actions. However, teaching and celebrating book burning is a rejection of the very essence of learning.

What is truly chilling is the Orwellian call for children to burn books in order to be a more “inclusive country.”

I wish I had been there with a loudspeaker and a recording of the Horst Wessel hymn.

And you would probably be welcomed. Here is something I heard about the Nazi book burning, though I am not sure if it’s true. They burned many scientific books, that would have been useful, for the German nuclear weapons program.

Ironically, this time the book burners first came for the Nazis.

The first legal books (i.e., no copyright infringement or other legal problems) to be banned by Amazon were Holocaust denial books, at the behest of the World Jewish Congress.

That was in 2017, when Amazon first began banning books.

In their press release, the WJC thanks Amazon for finally listening to them (they had been pressuring Amazon since 2013), and says they have a list of other books that still need to be removed:

WJC press release.

History is full of ironies.

Amazon's initial promise in the 1990s was to list every book ever published. Libraries even began to use Amazon, rather than the ISBN, to search for titles.

Of course, after Amazon set a precedent by caving to the WJC's demands, Amazon began to cave to everyone (on the left). Book banning became the new rule.

Being delisted by Amazon is far more powerful censorship than someone buying a few copies to burn. If a book's not on Amazon, in a sense it doesn't exist. It's like "unpersoning" a book.

Had they measured the temperature of the books the instant at which the pages started to burn, they would have recorded a temperature of 451 degrees Fahrenheit.

What were some of the titles I’d like to read them.

There's always Books In Print. It used to be carried (hard copy) by bookstores as a reference tool, and clerks would use it when someone wanted to special order something. Now it's a database.

First they burn books, then they burn people.

Bradbury placed the story in 2049...

I have read that as well. Additionally, some of the foremost scientists in the Manhattan project were German jews who fled the country when the nazis came to power.

The Nazi’s were book burners.

Yes. And a Jew predicted that when they burn books, they’ll end up burning bodies!

what is truly scary is that if you take the action of book burning and remove the narrative that they are using as an excuse for burning books tell them that we are burning books written by a perceived to be persecuted minority or a gay person they would start yelling how evil the action was.

Serious question: Has there been a time in history when the book burners ended up being the good guys?

Highly unlikely. The top scientists working on the nuke program didn't need textbooks. All the advanced knowledge was available from other sources.
