How The National Review Sold Its Soul to Google
Emerald Robinson's The Right Way ^ | Aug 30, 2021 | Emerald Robinson

There were rumors in the summer of 2018 that an audiotape was circulating that would send shockwaves through the think tanks of Washington and the conservative intellectual movement in particular. A top Google executive had been recorded telling his fellow employees that Google generously donated to conservative think tanks and magazines to dampen criticism of their anti-conservative bias. In essence, Google was buying off Conservatism Inc. and the GOP establishment to stay silent while Google monitored, harassed, and excluded Trump supporters. If true, the tape sounded like a smoking gun: incontrovertible evidence of the corruption and double-dealing of Conservatism Inc. that would permanently discredit it with Republican voters.

I was ahead by about three years when Nat Review trashed Newt as a presidential contender after his stellar debate performance. Delinked from them completely...

Yes, folks, controlled opposition is real. Fox News does fall into this category.

This article is the Rosetta Stone to understanding the “Cruise Ship” conservatives’ sabotage of conservatism and Trump. Fascinating.

I was a NR subscriber for 25 years. I detested Goldberg and Lowry from day one after they fired Ann Coulter. I knew the publisher and told him that magazine was in big trouble. When NR turned against the Tea Party that was the last straw for me. It’s a shame how the post Buckley crew ruined his life’s work by being greedy social climbers.

The GOP, and establishment Republicans, are not supporters of individual liberty and other “conservative” principles. Nor are they supporters of entrepreneurialism and small business. They support big government, globalism (i.e. subordinating US interests to the goals of global institutions and multinational corporations), open borders, and one size fits all big government solutions to national issues.

Neither major political party represents founding fathers concept of limited government, individual liberty, and personal accountability.

Look at the leaders the GOP members of Congress have selected. Both Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy are political hacks serving corporate, big government and foreign interests at the expense of the American people and our national interests. Follow the money. Google pays, the average Joe struggling to start or maintain a small business does not.

The Chicoms (and by that I include the Democrat Party, literally, from DiFiChiSpy to SwallowsWell with BangBangFangFang), did the same thing to the GOP.
And those who couldn’t be bought, they blackmailed or bribed.

A “new” conservatism isn’t going to cut it. There’s little left in the way of institutions to conserve. In the coming years, we’re going to have to find a new way to establish some semblance of what we hold dear in whatever political system this geographic area we live in becomes.

Agree 100% and its becoming more evident everyday. Even as rings continue to pay lip service.

I stopped reading NR when Florence King’s “Misanthrope’s Column” stopped appearing on the back page. Gad, she was witty, caustic, sharp and unapologetic. Like Bill Buckley (who would bitch slap Goldberg & Lowry), King is sorely missed.

I know Glenn Beck did a mea culpa for the “Against Trump” cover.

Did anyone else?

Katie Pavlich?

Mr. Meghan McCain?

Brent Bozell?

My preferred teerm is "counter-revolutionary". Interestingly, G.K. Chesterton often used the term "radical", as he saw the institutions already broken.

Well Florence died so she had a good excuse.

Strangely enough there was southern gal who wrote for Garden & Guns, Julia Reed, who reminded me of Florence. Unfortunately she died too.

Julia Reed comes from very similar background to my own

Except she was Delta and tonier schooling

She came from a conservative family.

Her politics were hard to peg.

Garden and Gun....I gave up on it though I liked the aesthetic

Liberals...even southern ones ...ruin everything
