A couple observations:

1. Dunno if he was even pretending not to, but that line was from a script, not spoken testimony. Nobody says "epithets". Most people don't even know how to pronounce it, and the little jornos at the CompPost, etc., probably had to look it up.

2. If he was engaging the protesters in a political discussion, then he was clearly not under "attack." And he should be reprimanded for having done so, anyway.

3. I seriously doubt anyone used racial slurs, because in response to telling the protesters that he voted for Biden, the logical response wouldn't be the N-word, it'd be the C-word, and not the one with the c followed by two "o"s -- the one with it followed by "-o-m-m-i-e" and likely along with a reference to his birth to an unwed mother.
