America isn’t the country it used to be, and deep down, everyone knows it. Every day, bit by bit, America is becoming more unfree, more decrepit, and more miserable. Day to day, the rot may sometimes be hard to notice. Your neighborhood or your town may be holding together or even improving, while the country slowly slides into ruin.
With brains, courage, persistence and leadership we have no doubt that America can right its own ship. But for now, the decline is unmistakeable. Eventually, it smacks you right in the face. But what is the best way to realize that America is sliding into the abyss? Two people here at Revolver have differing views on that question. One believes that traveling through an American airport is the best way to see the country’s decay, while the other proposes a different method: A trip to one of America’s many theme parks.
There is a reason that President Donald Trump singled out “third-world” airports as especially emblematic of American decline. One might even say that flying through O’Hare or LaGuardia is the best way to discover that the U.S. is now a “shithole country.”
Safetyism and Security Theater
When ordinary people fly, they have to remove their shoes at security. By now, the practice is a well-worn ritual. Younger people might even be mistaken that this has always been a standard part of security. Of course, it hasn’t always been that way.

Once. That stupid talking mouse marked for me our cultural decline. But at least the park's avid capitalism was reassuring.
You know how you have to take off your shoes to get through the airport boarding gate because, once, 18years ago some Muslim had a bomb in his shoe????
Now think about your face masks.
3x the TSA workers as border patrol employees.
Rebuilding airports costs a lot of money. Instead, money that could be used for this and other infrastructure projects is being used to pay people not to work.
And for the record - I’m old enough to remember sprinting through the airport 5 minutes before my flight, throwing my backpack through the metal detector and in and out of security in under 30 seconds then literally jumping into the boarding gate as they closed the door.
Ahh - those were the days.
Or seeing friends and family off or arrive AT THE GATE as they deplaned.
Or watching the air traffic from the OUTDOOR observation decks.
I gather this journo hasn’t flown lately. Chicago? Houston? The smaller cities building constantly on their airports?
Well, let’s get our freedoms back!
He has a narrative to support.
Denver has shithole airport too.
We have long been fascist here.
Leftists made it so, with all the regulation of everything that they couldn’t “own”. That is the definition of fascism. Telling people what to do with their own stuff.
My theory has long been that liberal govs are HUGE on petty issues because they can rack up their numbers to seem they are “tough on crime”.
They won’t/can’t get after real criminals (including KEEPING them incarcerated), so they make it up with nonsense like seatbelt-wearing and failing to cut down a tree.
Auto Club does that. Now it’s online and anybody can rate the stops. I depended on it getting from California to Texas.
Fifty years ago, my father was on a flight out of LaGuardia and the pilot, on the intercom, called it “La Garbage.”
The sad part about that is now the roadways are getting so full of traffic that there are pileups and congestion delays around any city of any size.
I hate going through Nashville on the way to Florida. Add in Atlanta and Orlando and there’s enough pain and delay to frustrate anyone.
Totally did not know that. Thanks for the information.
Yep. On any interstate drive, I always stop and top off the gas tank 30-50 miles outside of any big city just an case I find myself sitting in traffic.
As you may recall, President Trump proposed that any infrastructure plan include our airports. He mentioned it several times.
I would also include fortifying the power grid.
You should see the European and Asian airports......they are FABULOUS and ours are CRAPPY as hell!! You cannot imagine how they differ if you haven’t seen them.
OMG!! I have NEVER seen such horrible potholes and roads as I have seen outside of Manhattan. And the TOLLS are ridiculous!
