The same could be said for a mind boggling natural disaster. For example should the Yellowstone caldera become airborne. It would spell good night Eileen for a good portion of the US as well as bedlam for the rest of the world.

Harry Turtledove had an alternate reality book where this happened during WW2. It was pretty interesting to see how some groups of people remained enemies and some sided with the aliens to further there agenda.
Can’t remember the title right now but was a fun read.
