Earlier this week, Joe Biden joined hands with the likes of Mitt Romney and Lisa Murkowski to announce a ‘bipartisan’ infrastructure deal. The $1.2 trillion package was meant to be a compromise between the original monstrosity proposed by Democrats and simply not passing anything at all.
Yet, no sooner than the jubilant photo op ended, Biden had blown up the deal by saying the quiet part out loud in regards to what the Democrats planned to do. Whereas the Republicans saw the deal as a substitute for the original proposal, Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer all wanted to tie passage of it to the passage of a reconciliation bill that would give Democrats everything else they wanted.
To a normal person, that probably seems crazy. Why would Republicans make a deal in the first place, if Democrats planned on cramming through everything that was conceded via reconciliation? Doesn’t that completely defeat the purpose of the deal? It’s like making a deal to buy a house, only to have the buyer demand twice as much at closing.
As I wrote at the time, Republicans got played. They thought they were going to unify with Democrats to pass just the meat and potatoes of the infrastructure wishlist. Instead, after they stuck their necks out to support $1.2 trillion in new spending, Biden pulled the rug out from under them.
BIDEN: If they don’t come [in tandem] I’m not signing them.

REPORTER: Do you support then, Speaker Pelosi’s stated plan to hold the bipartisan deal in the House until the Senate also passes reconciliation? Do you support that sequencing on her part?

Now, realizing what he’s done, Biden is backtracking fast. He’s put out a new statement claiming he did not mean exactly what he said, i.e. that he would not sign the bipartisan deal until reconciliation was passed.
Here’s his new position.
NEWS: POTUS clarifies he does not intend to veto bipartisan deal if it comes to bis desk w/o reconciliation. Assures GOP they can still support bipartisan plan and oppose the rest.

To be clear, this is in no way a clarification on Biden’s part. Rather, it’s a complete reversal of his prior position. Also, notice that Biden does not mention Pelosi’s plan to hold the bipartisan deal hostage. That’s purposeful, as it allows the president to attempt to play both sides of the fence.
Regardless, there is absolutely no excuse for Republicans to fall for this scheme again. Biden is not to be trusted, and in reality, that has little to do with anything Biden himself may or may not do. It is the Senate that will ultimately pass or not pass a reconciliation bill. It is Pelosi that will choose whether to advance the bipartisan compromise in the House. Biden has no control over either of those things. In other words, his promises are meaningless and should be discarded.
The GOP has yet another opportunity to walk away from the table. They should take it. This has gone on far enough and enough egg has been placed on the face of Republicans. Democrats are not operating in good faith and have no plans to do so. There is also no logical reason to make a “deal” with Biden, if he plans on ramming through the rest of his wishlist via reconciliation. All Republicans are doing at that point is legitimizing part of the spending as bipartisan — for nothing in return.
In short, the concessions made in the deal mean nothing, if it doesn’t also take reconciliation off the table, and with Biden flip-flopping on that issue multiple times now, trust has been thoroughly broken. Walk away.
They are not going to walk and I banked on it.
I think Senators like Susan Collins thought the bipartisan infrastructure bill would pass but the Democrats would wait one or two months later to pass the rest of what they wanted by budget reconciliation two months later. But if Biden signs both bills on the same day, even “low information” voters would notice that Biden played those “moderate” Republican senators to get his way. Susan Collins should be embarassed.
I’ve learned in my years observing and experiencing. One of the hard fast rules is... don’t get your hopes up... it just leads to disappointment. I’m an old dog that sits on the porch and watches the world go by. Like all old dogs, we see patterns. We also see that those patterns never change. It starts becoming like watching the same movie over and over again and thinking it will come out different... or reading the same book and thinking there will be some other ending. Getting older, “maturing” is “largely” about “acceptance”. Why ruin what time you have left over crap you’re NEVER going to change?
None of these traitors “fell” for anything. They know exactly what they are doing. Despicable.
Oh, okay. Everything is a conspiracy perpetrated by every Republican. We’re all inevitably doomed. We’re going to lose in spite of any efforts. There’s no way to win, and it won’t ever happen. Nothing more to do here. Bye.
Why are the authors speaking of “the GOP” when the only folks Biden made an “agreement with” were ten of the 50 GOP Senators???
Also he doesn’t have to actually veto the bill. He can just pocket veto it by NOT signing it.
Bush League Republicans MUST become extinct.
Assistant Democrats will always assist the Democrats.
BTW, doesn’t the big Democrat infrastructure bill have to pass by September 30 in order to qualify for reconciliation this year?
RE: doesn’t the big Democrat infrastructure bill have to pass by September 30 in order to qualify for reconciliation this year?
Yes, but they’ve got plenty of time for that.
Not that much time when you have to consider the massive amount of work that has to go into writing the bill and all the other Senate procedures that go into it. Plus there are other bills that the Senate has to consider including Schumer ridiculously bringing up the Federalizing the elections bill again just so it can be be voted down again.
So no, not plenty of time left.
bkmk
Tucker Carlson had a segment on this tonight.
The Obama/ Biden Infrastructure plan is coming to your suburb very soon when the plan is implemented with little resistance from Republicans.

Towns could have to chose between forfeiting the money or allowing apartments in every neighborhood and allowing suburban lots to be subdivided for as many houses as will fit
Stealth Goal Of Infrastructure Plan Could Be To Abolish The Suburbs By Bribing Towns To Change Zoning Laws
Democrats may use their massive “infrastructure” plan to bribe local governments to essentially abolish suburbs, by making grants contingent upon towns and counties allowing apartments in any neighborhood, including those currently limited to single-family homes.
That creates two scenarios, both of which benefit Democrats seeking power: If jurisdictions want to preserve a small-town feel, they must turn down the money, meaning the massive infusion of taxpayer dollars turns into a bonanza for Democratic-dominated cities, while leaving others out
Or if centrist suburbs give in to the temptation to take the money, they would essentially be signing a contract to become architecturally dense, like cities — and once those apartments and townhouses were built and filled with residents, they’d likely become solidly Democrat, like most urban areas. Both outcomes would irrevocably and fundamentally transform the country.
USA Today reported in April that “Biden’s proposal would award grants and tax credits to cities that change zoning laws to bolster more equitable access to affordable housing. A house with a white picket fence and a big backyard for a Fourth of July barbecue may be a staple of the American dream, but experts and local politicians say multifamily zoning is key to combating climate change, racial injustice, and the nation’s growing affordable housing crisis.”
The logic is that minorities are “trapped in crowded neighborhoods” that are not pleasant to live in. Yet the solution, under this logic, appears to be making the places suburbanites live more crowded, with apartments and townhouses
