The few examples I’ve read of trying to fix genetic defects by altering the DNA turned out bad. They simply don’t know enough about how nature actually works to pull it off.

There are currently a variety of technologies available to target genes for ‘correction’ (i.e. targeted alteration/correction of specific gene mutations). Some of these can be facilitated by the use of mRNA to encode specific proteins that will help facilitate gene correction. An example would be the injection of mRNA encoding specific zinc finger protein endonucleases that are engineered to cut out a targeted DNA mutation and thus facilitate correction. The mRNAs themselves are not altering the genes/DNA. It's the proteins they've been programmed to encode that do.
The bottom line is that the biggest treat of the current vaccines is that they elicit an immune response that is detrimental (e.g. causing inflammation of the heart). Not that they are altering your DNA.
