Yet another study finds that “whole of life” carbon footprint of electric cars is little different to conventional cars:
April 14th 2021, Jefferies published a research note entitled “Are EVs as ‘Green’ as They Appear?” in which they conclude an electric vehicle must be driven 200,000 km (or 124,000 miles) before its “whole of life” carbon emissions equals that of an internal combustion engine.
Their analysis is very similar to ours and details the tremendous amount of energy (and by extension CO2) needed to manufacture a lithium-ion battery. Moreover, they point out that a typical EV is on average 50% heavier than a similar internal combustion engine, requiring more steel and aluminium in the frame. They conclude the “embedded carbon” in an EV (i.e., when it rolls off the lot) is therefore 20–50% more than an internal combustion engine.
Our analysis suggests a modern lithium-ion battery has approximately 135,000 miles of range before it degrades to the point of becoming unusable. An extended-range Tesla Model 3 has an 82 kWh battery and consumes approximately 29 kWh per 100 miles. Assuming each charge cycle has a ~95% round-trip efficiency and a battery can achieve 500 cycles before starting to degrade, we conclude a Model 3 can drive 134,310 miles before dramatically losing range. Incidentally, Tesla’s Model 3 warranty covers the battery for the lesser of eight years or 120,000 miles and does not apply until the battery has degraded by at least 30%. If the Jefferies analysis is correct (and we believe it is), then an EV will reach carbon-emission parity with an internal-combustion vehicle just as its battery requires replacement. This will come as a huge disappointment for those believing that EV adoption will have significant impacts on CO2 reduction.

The “mileage” of EVs isn’t all that.
Power generation, line losses, inefficiencies in motors ... all work against their “advantages”. As they grow in numbers and the power grid doesn’t keep up (again, the environmentalist will stop it and muck up what they don’t stop by insisting on unreliable “renewables”) then energy costs will begin to increase, and not just on the EVs but on homes and industry. Roads are also not funded by electrical supply, and it will require more intrusive government to make them pay up.
A hybrid, as I said, eliminates the need to substantially enhance the grid, as power generation scales automatically.
As for ICE, they are fine for stop and go. Expectations have been unrealistically raised by a class of folks who think their “best” isn’t an enemy of the good.
When at a stop light next to an EV look and see how many Leftwing or environmentalist bumper stickers they have ... rev your engine loudly just to annoy them if they’ve got more than 1.
I own 2 SUV’s and a convertible (all paid for).
My gasoline costs $60 to $100 bucks per week. Since none are brand new maintenance costs occur regularly.
Factoring in all of the tax breaks I will be out of pocket $100 per month for my Ford Mach e with little to no maintenance for quite some time. I will charge overnight with zero concern for my 20 to 30 miles per day.
If it makes sense for me it makes sense for others.
And to recycle all the metal and melt it into new products with oil and gas! lol
They definitely increase the smug level.
That’s a good point, maybe if all you do is city driving an EV makes sense. But there is no way you’re going to be able to have an infrastructure to completely replace ICE vehicles with EVs.
That’s going to be a big problem in Iowa, since the electric company wants to go all wind power in the future. It’s incredibly dumb.
Doesn’t that process also require energy? I don’t know, just asking...
Perhaps Plug In America and Tesla are not the most objective sources of info on such things.
Wow, what a self-righteous tool he must be.
Yes, it was never about the science or facts. It’s about control and socialism.
Ha, ha, beautiful!
The socialists used the pandemic to defeat Trump so they could take control of the country. For them, a crisis is a thing not to waste. To do so, they politicized the science. To get the country down the road to serfdom, they don’t need the hassle of the pandemic. I think this is where the vaccines come in to make that road easier. The Leftnicks may seem like our friends, but they give with one hand so they can take with the other.
Our brilliant legislators and voters put in the NevaDUH Revised Statutes to be all “renewable” by 2050. 50% by 2030 or else. Or else what we have no clue but it won’t be good I’m pretty sure.
“But there is no way you’re going to be able to have an infrastructure to completely replace ICE vehicles with EVs.”
I 100% agree…but I also think the current idiots in DC are going to waste trillions of dollars we don’t have trying.
