The Roman Emperor Commodus (161-192 AD) is widely regarded as one of the "˜bad emperors" and a bloody tyrant. This image has been perpetuated in several movies, especially the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1964) and Gladiator (2000). His reign and life were extraordinary by even the standards of the Roman Empire. However, what was the legacy of Commodus and was he is evil and Emperor as is often made out?

I happen to have a denarius of Commodus. Roman emperors used their coinage to spread their ideas. Anyway Commodus’s denarius instead of portraying him as wearing a laurel wreath, has him wearing a lion’s head as a kind of helmet—an attribute of Hercules. And just to make the point, the reverse has a club with the inscription ‘Roman Hercules’.
So whatever else he was, he sure was fixated on the idea that he was a reincarnated Hercules.

He added Herculaeus to his name too! And If I remember correctly he tried to change the name of Rome itself to Commidaianus or something like that. Ended up taking a dirt nap shortly thereafter. I have a few myself from later emperors. But have never seen this one. Nice coin. I wonder what the silver content is. This is right before the crisis of the third century so it probably has a high silver content. Yeah, the club, lol. He really must have thought he was the reincarnation of Hercules.
