Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen urged people in Taiwan not to hoard food and masks on Saturday after a recent Chinese coronavirus lockdown order in Taipei and its surrounding area caused residents to panic buy basic household supplies.
Taiwan’s government raised its four-tier coronavirus alert system to a level three for the first time on May 15, issuing partial lockdown orders for its capital, Taipei, and the surrounding New Taipei City in response to a recent surge in new daily Chinese coronavirus cases in the region. The order sparked a panic buying frenzy in the capital area on Saturday, as residents scrambled to stock up on essential goods. Photos circulated on social media of Taipei supermarkets with empty shelves and long lines of customers....
Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) held an emergency press conference on May 15 to announce 180 new, locally transmitted cases of the Chinese coronavirus in the country, which was “the largest number of domestic infections reported in one day since the start of the pandemic in Taiwan,” according to Taiwan News. The majority of the new cases were documented in Taipei (89) and New Taipei City (75).
“Taiwan reported 206 new local cases of the Chinese coronavirus May 16, “breaking the previous day’s record high of 180,” the U.K. newspaper the Guardian reported.
Health experts cautioned the public that Taiwan’s sharp rise in Chinese coronavirus case numbers on Sunday was “probably partly a result of mass testing drives over the weekend,” the newspaper noted.
New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi announced on May 17 that preparations were currently underway in the city “to raise the COVID-19 [Chinese coronavirus] alert to Level 4, after 333 new local COVID-19 cases were reported on Monday (May 17),” Taiwan News reported...

Seems like some basic math is in order to know if a mountain is being made of a molehill.
I agree...makes no sense to see the case load explode by orders of magnitude. Something funny there...maybe China is testing a spray on them, or something.
A relative of mine lives there, blames an airline pilot who did not quarantine long enough.
Something funny regarding Wuhan flu and the CCP? Fauci is probably involved somewhere. It was this same kind of BS sensational reporting that laid the groundwork for our own national scam.
CHICOM BIOWEAPON USE LIKE INDIA.
Probably recent ChiCom directed virus variant, directed at Taiwan. Weaken them just before the imminent attack.
Hello.....
If you’re going to lockdown people again and they realize they don’t have enough stuff in the house, what do you expect them to do?
however at this point, how could they NOT have the foresight to be prepared?
How to not prep ping.
You’d think they’d have learned by now.
however at this point, how could they NOT have the foresight to be prepared?
China has implemented draconian lock-down restrictions, tracking, quarantine and testing programs, as only Chinese Communists can.
My question is though - Coronavirus is with us forever. How can they ever open up trade, business, tourism again? They have effectively built a Great Covid Wall of China.
Places like India and the USA will be in much better shape going forward.
How can they ever open up trade, business, tourism again?
Simple, they don't have to. If the Chinese government runs short on cash they can always just call in all the loans they have made to our reckless overspending government. Then it is the USA who will be screwed.
This is a very worrying development. Taiwan had NO DEATHS and close to ZERO CASES for over 12 months.
Taiwanese people seem to have an acquired immunity due to exposure to a prior type of Covid.
So........ I am suspicious that this might be the sequel to Covid 19.
India is blaming Singapore and Taiwan for their outbreak.
Just like the Chicoms tried to blamed the US and Italy for the initial outbreak
Singapore probably will cancel the Employment Passes (H1Bs) of all the Indians working there (they have the exact same problem the US has. Absolute Indian domination of IT and finance - and unemployed Singaporeans are pissed)
Infection,.. or a reinfection ?
or is this another infection to weaken the world economy by threatening the world's largest supplier of electronics chip maker ?
Many industries have curtailed manufacturing due an already shortage of chips and a breakdown of the shipping supply chain.
The Taiwanese people are aware that they are in China's crosshairs for world-wide expansionism ?
But, since they are aware of world-wide economic and territorial threats, they should prepare systematically and prudently,
and not 'prep' based on emotion and impending chaos and product shortages.
They should know better !
Given the situation, you’d think the average Taiwanese household would be well stocked as a matter of policy. It is puzzling why they have not embraced the Swiss outlook for defense.
Even with the government watching you, you could still surreptitiously buy just a little bit extra whenever you shop and store it.
Then TPTB will just see that as your normal spending or shopping pattern and it won’t raise any red flags and you’ll still be able to stock up and afford it because it will be budgeted for.
I have friends who are doing that very thing. Actually, a lot of people have told me they are doing it.
Use cash and the government can’t track you. I once thought was the ‘war on cash’ was a fantasy of the “Black Helicopter Crowd” but now I am convinced that many bureaucrats want to move in that direction.
Heh - got back on this machine after not using it for a while, and my post not posted is still here. Well, what the heck...
I rather suspect that “most Taiwanese just don’t think that way”. Sort of a cultural thing.
I’ll also guess many Taiwanese have rather cramped living space to begin with.
Possibly there has been a certain arrogance “We are superior and have this under control”. Never mind that viruses may be tiny machines, but they are tiny, clever (in their way), and most importantly, utterly relentless (think radical Muzzies). WHO (yeah, I know) has identified 485 flu variants in the US since 2005. Most minor, but, still...
And, last, even if 2/3 of the population is prepped, at least a little, that leaves 1/3 not prepared at all. Big problem. As we shall see someday here in the US, too. :-(
