Posted on 05/15/2021 8:39:13 AM PDT by Saint Athanasius
The brute fact is that the GOP today—unlike its original incarnation—has no rootedness in any specific moral conception of political life. It is an unmoored, mercenary instrument for hire.
By Tal Bachman
Once upon a time, the Republican Party didn’t suck. Actually, there were lots of times it didn’t suck.
It didn’t suck when, at its founding in the late 1850s, it declared slavery an inhumane, barbaric practice, and eventually ended it. It didn’t suck when it ended repressive and predatory Mormon polygamy a few decades later. It didn’t suck when it declared late 19th-century corporate monopolies to be injurious to representative democracy and citizen welfare, and diminished their power.
It didn’t suck under President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who presided over a postwar era of peace and prosperity. It didn’t suck when it fought segregationist Democrats to ensure equal application of the law. It didn’t suck when it fought against communism for half a century, and then won.
But starting with the presidency of George H. W. Bush, it really began sucking.
It was Bush Senior who pushed America into the first Persian Gulf War amidst a massive PR snow job involving fake stories about little Kuwaiti kids. It was Bush who framed that war as a glorious opportunity and morally obligatory step toward a “new world order”—by which he meant the eventual dissolution of national borders (including those of the United States) and the rise of one-world-government.

The best line of the whole article -
So why choose her? Because they’re the Republican Party. Sucking is what they do.
Left it 16 years ago...
Polticians hate populism, it’s govenement for the people, rather than for the politicians. So, whenever populism pops up, in any party, the politicians fall all over themselves to try ro stomp it out.
The other matter is corporatism. The pubs used to be for corporations, while the dems were for grass-level graft.
Now that the Dems have fully embraced corporatism, there is no use for the “old” Republican party, but the ‘pub red meat of being for America and patriotism created a space for Trump’s populism to take hold.
And since nature abhors a vaccuum, take off it did.
The GOP: the Conservative party that has conserved nothing.
The republican party sucks, no doubt. But to place the blame in the beginning of the suck on Bush I is just wrong.
Bush did not push America into the Persian Gulf war. Rather he won that war rather handily in six weeks. Resulting in an approval rating of 90%
GHWB had a lot of faults, to be sure. But he is not the reason why the republican party sucks.
What many here STILL do not get is that while today’s Republican Party does suck*, the opposition no longer just disagrees with us, but they want us re-educated, or if not possible, dead. The people who sit out elections to, you know, ‘teach the GOP a lesson’, are enabling this. They’re welcome to bitch all they want about Republican traitors, etc., of which there are many, but even those traitors don’t want us dead (or re-educated). So, I guess, by enabling the Democrats, those people intend to have us killed (or forcibly re-educated), and then, after that, we’ll rise up and fight back!
*by the way, it is sucking less and less with Trump taking over.
Trump showed what a decisive leader is and they despise him for it. He made them all look bad.
The GOP: the Conservative party that has conserved nothing.
It conserves big government. It claims to do the opposite but they always keep funding and expanding it.
Excellent article, well written. The author has a keen eye.
Needs taking over and it’s happening but a ways to go. Trump would never come out of dimwit party
Precisely right. Trump exposed them all and for that he was run out of town — by both parties.
Big government needs a big beat down.
Sad but True.
Been saying it for awhile now, the left are engaged in an al. Out hostile takeover of this country. They don’t give a rip about rules, laws, the constitution, nothing. They are hell bent on dominating this country and making everyone else’s life miserable.
The left used to at least disguise their intentions... no more! They are out for revenge and domination.
I finally left it back in January for the 1st time in 35 years. Done with that worthless whore. I still vote but the ballot box is a joke.
The only reason anyone votes for the Republican Party is that they are the lesser of two evils. If not for that, no one would vote for them because they have nothing to offer — except for their legendary capacity for appeasement and their continued expansion of big government.
Unlike the Dims, seldom is the GOP one party.
To say the “Republican Party” sucks, to me always throws out too much of the baby with the bathwater.
To me more accurate criticism would not aim like a blunderbuss at everyone, but at the specific GOP members the author is REALLY critical of.
To say the “Republican Party” sucks could only be “true” if the author had not one single GOP member they liked.
I seriously doubt that is true for the author, and so I find the author’s criticism childish and dishonest.
To me the GOP does “suck” but where it sucks most is in how it is always so ineffective at communication. Then again, the GOP does not have ABC/CBS/CNN/MSNBC/NBC/NPR et al working 24/7/365 as their own virtual state media.
Needs taking over and it’s happening but a ways to go.
It will never be taken over IMO. The GOP has been around for a long time and its staying power, which is based on manipulating the base and converting newly elected officials into RINOs, is actually pretty formidable.
The formation of a new party dedicated to conservative ideals is the only real alternative.
An oversized and overbearing government is the source of many of our problems today.
