I should clarify that making DC 51st state by legislation is not constitutional according to Heritage Foundation...

One political party doesn’t give a Xit about the US Constitution, the other political party is afraid to defend it.

...wouldn't changing that status from Federal seat of government to a State require an amendment to the Constitution?

No. It only requires a majority vote by the Court of Supreme Whim. They'll find the reason in the emanations of the penumbra somehow.

Article IV Section 3

“New states may be admitted by the Congress into this union; but no new states shall be formed or erected within the jurisdiction of any other state; nor any state be formed by the junction of two or more states, or parts of states, without the consent of the legislatures of the states concerned as well as of the Congress.

“The Congress shall have power to dispose of and make all needful rules and regulations respecting the territory or other property belonging to the United States...”

Article I, Section 8

“The Congress shall have power
...
To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of Government of the United States...”

I suspect Congress would have to get Maryland’s permission to make DC a state. I believe Maryland has a Republican governor.

Romney will vote Yay.

And if that fails because Romney has a stroke, there's still Murkowski, Collins, Toomey, and any number of other fall-backs to go to...

Unfortunately if Texas were to split into 5 states, each one would be weighted by Democrat run megaplexes so instead of 2 Republican senators there would be 10 Democrats.

Wont pass the Senate(Unless the commies get rid of the filibuster) but this is nothing more than a power grab. I think they know they will lose the House next yr so they are going all in, they know if they can keep the Senate forever it will be good for them and they dont need any RINO republican support for anything ever again

It will take a Constitutional Amendment to make DC a state.

All states will have their infleunce diminished by making DC a state, Since DC is right there even the governor of such a state will have more “influence” then all others and efectively more then state Senators & Congresscritter.
The other states would have to agree I don’t see them doing it.

Well, the U.S. Constitution doesn’t matter anymore.

Maybe it’s time to start shooting? The Founding Fathers would be.

It’s unconstitutional. My bet is that the SCOTUS declines to take the case. That’s how corrupt our government has become, all 3 branches.

I’m sure the deed or whatever legal document giving the land to the federal government has some kind of stipulation where this issue is addressed. Time to dig into the archives and find it to see what exactly can be done with that land. Maryland, I’m sure ceded the land with conditions. The Virginia part of DC was returned to Virginia a while back.
