Forget Orwell’s “1984,” let’s talk about something that happened in the actual 1984.
That year, the movie “Night of the Comet” appeared in theatres. It was a bad movie but the plot was interesting.
In short, a comet passed close to Earth and either vaporized everyone or turned them into zombies.
Almost everyone.
18-year-old Regina "Reggie" Belmont, played by actress Catherine Mary Stewart survived because she was in a steel movie projection room inside a theatre. Anyone who spent the night in a steel structure had avoided vaporization and zombification.
And so it went. A small group of survivors with machine guns battled zombies for two hours to a backdrop of energetic 80’s music. You can watch it for free if you have absolutely nothing better to do.
It feels like we’ve been hit by another comet. A comet that zombified millions and millions of people with sheer stupidity.
Seemingly overnight, things are incredibly absurd. Dumb ideas - preposterously vacuous notions - are adopted by once-reasonable people en masse. Those who don’t immediately adopt the new, whacky doctrine are punished.

But we won’t. As a great woman said in a cinematic masterpiece, “The whole burden of civilization has fallen upon us.”
Catherine Mary Stewart was very easy on the eyes. Just saying.
Hey, aren’t there rules?
I saw the “Night of the Comet” movie when it came out. Not the best SciFi movie, but it had its moments. And, as the years have gone by, it has gained a cult following.
“Night of the Creeps” was another forgotten 80s SciFi gem (it came out in 1986).
Good choice!
I would read more but you have to be a paid subscriber. By the way, Night of the Comet might be a stupid movie, BUT, it’s a great stupid movie. Up to and including the ending where the younger sister jaywalks, the older sister tells her look both ways, and the younger sister does nearly get run over. Luckily the driver is a cute teenage boy. So younger sis drives off with her and older sis tells her to come home early.
““Night of the Comet””
yep, I remember . . .
Every once in a while, FR makes me smile. Like when I get the joke, the comment, the reference, the allusion . . .
Was in the Chiropractors office the other day. They had Music from the ‘80s playing on the Muzak.
High School music . . . for near 60 year olds.
If you’re lucky, you get 100 years.
This has been building for a long time under the surface and hit critical mass under B Clinton. Then it coalesced and swelled up further until, under 0bama, it exploded - which encouraged still more idiot bombs to go boom and so it continues until they are all used up
“Night of the Comet”
Favorite line...”Daddy would have gotten us UZIS!”
Got it on DVD!
Her sister was also nice!
Where?
Great post.
