Criticizing it as based on "calendars, not conditions," Richard Haas, in his ever-polite fashion, has ripped President Biden's decision to withdraw all US troops from Afghanistan by the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
On today's Morning Joe, Haass, the show's foreign policy maven and president of the Council on Foreign Relations, predicted with "near certainty" a "human rights tragedy" in Afghanistan as a result of Biden's decision. Haass also ominously foresaw that Afghanistan would once again become a bse of operations for terrorist groups like Al Qaeda and ISIS.
Morning Joe's Willie Geist, interviewing Haass, didn't precisely defend Biden's decision. But he did channel what he imagined others are thinking about it:
"I think a lot of people watching right now would say, my gosh, we’ve been there for 20 years. President Biden is right. It’s time to go home."

Biden better hope there are no terrorist attacks launched from Afghanistan by ISIS or al Qaeda after his withdrawal of US troops.
They’re painting this as “Biden, finally will get our troops out of Afghanistan.” instead of the truth, which is that he is delaying withdrawal.
Prediction: Biden will not withdraw troops by the end of the year....
WTF?!
There will be horrific attacks, and Trump will be blamed.
We should never have put boots on the ground in that forsaken land.
We will never change Afghanistan, we’ve been there too long, it’s time to leave.
I support Biden’s plan to withdraw troops, even when terrorists move there and make it a base for operations.
I like the idea that every time a pundit calls for troops to be deployed or kept overseas, that pundit is immediately drafted into the front line units.
Or after the may 1 original withdraw date. Between may 1 and 9/11 if we lose service members because he decided to leave them longer then it’s on biden.
“There will be horrific attacks, and Trump will be blamed. “
As long as Trump’s blamed, what the problem with Americans being killed?
Why? The media will blame Trump and the low information voters (that is, Democrat) will follow the media’s lead.
I always look to MSNBC for political and tactical military decisions, doesn’t everyone?
amazing that Dems know we have troops in Afghanistan. i certainly haven’t noticed them remembering or supporting them since Obama escalated way back when.
I don’t know why we can’t pull troops out but continue monitoring and surveillance and as soon as we see a concentration of bad guys, drop cruise missiles on their heads. Point being, can we accomplish the goal of disrupting ISIS and Al Queda and keep them from using Afghan as a training/staging area by means other than having ground troops there?
Shoot, just put covid in the water supply or something...who’d know?
Is this over 2,500 troops, doesn’t seem like a force that large enough to do anything meaningful. Can’t the Afghans take care of themselves yet? After 20 years of being equipped and trained by American troops you’d think they’d have a decent military by now. Are we still guarding the poppy fields and looking the other way on heroin production? Asking for a friend😀
If you look in Wikipedia, it show his career started at age 31. What's with that?
No acknowledgment that he ever served in the Navy.
I've been following him since (before) 1988 when he came and talked to our NATO group. He did mentioned then, as he was talking to NATO military officers, that he served as a Navy officer, with background in intelligence as mentioned above.
You won't find any info on him these days connected to the U.S. military.
I wrote him off then, and continue to do so to this day. He has been a leftist liberal for as long as I have known of him.
