Unwoke hosting/domain companies, ad companies, funding...

Posted on 04/07/2021 9:17:18 AM PDT by chrisser

Let's say I wanted to build a small web site to try and make a small stab against wokeness.

In the past, I'd have probably registered a domain with Godaddy, and then either rented some hosting space or thrown up my own server.

In a rural area and it's hard enough to get a reliable DSL - and I need to stay on the good side of my ISP since I use it for work. So short of renting some commercial space in town and trying to get a business internet connection, it looks like I'd have to use a hosting company.

Are there any companies out there who still believe in freedom of speech? Where's a good place to register a domain and maybe rent some hosting space and get some basic email? Seems I've heard there are still some Swiss companies that haven't swallowed the woke koolaid. Anyone have some positive experiences to share?

Are there any ad services besides Google anymore? Or is there some way to easily self-host ads. How about crowd-source funding? Any orgs left that aren't going to cancel me as soon as a pink-hair gets xir panties in a twist?

Doing my own research in the background, but if any FReepers have positive experiences in these areas that might benefit me, post 'em up.

Someone will suggest you build your own internet, cellphone company, internet provider, and credit card company.

All because the Left won’t bake a cake and serve customers without discrimination.

LoL!
That’s true. I’ve seen those posts before.

If you’re just making a website, and maybe you want to be right of center, I don’t think you’ll have too many problems with godaddy and some main stream hosts. At the most suffering you might experience is google or your ad provider dropping you from trying to monetize, or google may nerf your SEO results.

Now, if you want to go the way of parler or gab, or worse maybe like 8chan and you are going to go full blown free speech which includes the radical right and/or hate groups, then you’ll have to do a lot of research and ground work. Since I doubt that’s where you are going with it, why not just take a shot at the cheat & easy hosting?

Costa Rica, maybe. They have some server farms down there, with co-hosting in some European countries if you want backup servers. On a project I was working on we picked one in Costa Rica. Wasn’t as easy as working with GoDaddy but if you know how to access a server root (which I don’t) they are a little less money and worked fine. You could get a CPanel accessible OS but our tech people didn’t need/want that.

For advertising, go to sites that have been censored by the tech giants for example zero hedge and see what companies serve their ads. They don’t use google type ads so they get ads from smaller companies.

And for Ads, you could start with google adsense or whatever they call it these days, and wait until they cut you off. Maybe they won’t. I guess it depends how much you want to anger them.

Use 2ndvote.com to find service providers who are neutral or conservative.

I can't speak to the advertising angle, but with regard to basic domain/hosting, here's what I do to avoid hosting-service problems.

DIY website hosting is not hard if you're somewhat computer savvy. The whole thing takes less than one day, even the first time through.

At that point you are your own ISP: you have your own domain and your own server, and nobody can say squat about your web content. It's not rocket science, and you have the satisfaction of not answering to anybody.

Note: If you're NOT computer savvy, but are fairly intelligent and willing to learn, allow a few initial hours to do the googling and reading required to understand the steps above.

And if you don't want to work with GoDaddy and/or Amazon, fine, there are plenty of alternative providers, and some of them aren't too woke.

I started working with GoDaddy and Amazon many years before "woke" was even a thing, and I just grit my teeth a little when I pay them for their service. :-)

Un-woke internet service advice ... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Thanks to Tolerance Sucks Rocks for the ping!

This is very familiar to me, although my Linux has gotten a little rusty.

But I’m concerned about AWS deciding to cut me off. No that I plan on being as big of a problem for them as Parler, but unless I can do some modest monetization, this would be a hobby that I do as time allows - getting doxed or having the virtual environment ripped out from under me without notice would be a big bummer.

Please do not submit your members to any Google API scripts... We don’t use any 3rd party scripts on our free speech community. You are either in it for the cause... Or in it for the money. It is hard to do both and still respect the privacy of your members. We are in it for the cause. The FR does a pretty good job of this. Wish it wasn’t hooked to Google though.

I would suggest that you do what any other small business does, make proposals to your local conservative businesses and just post their random rotating static banner ads in one spot as your site “Supporters”. It only costs about $100 a year for hosting, and that is why we are just in it for the cause as a priority.

It is more important than all the money in the world to us... :)

Lol, takes more than an hour to test everything my friend. :) Especially if you load up a turnkey boxed website script.

Directing your reply to chrisser, the OP, since this is his/her project. Nothing to do with me... though I agree with your sentiment.

As far as I can tell, AWS doesn't have any a priori knowledge of, or interest in, the web content on your AWS instance(s). Obviously illegal things like kid-porn excepted; I'm sure there's something in the TOS prohibiting illegal content. But they don't look at your site -- somebody else would have to complain. Fortunately, "non-woke" conservative, edgy content might get banned from Twatter, but it is not illegal.

My dayglored.com site that hosts the images I post for the FR Windows Ping List is one such AWS server. Just a tiny thing, since the bandwidth usage is low. The registry entry is private to prevent doxing, and my AWS account has 2FA to make it harder to hack into.

I guess it depends on the tradeoff between privacy/obscurity and being public enough to make money. As in so many things, YMMV.

Sorry if I read it wrong, I just saw you suggest Google services... Maybe it was in sarcasm?

What is wrong with the net today? Google API services... Even ICANN was bitten by the bug and will not let their site fully function without Google services. That means Google indirectly owns the ICANN domain registry along with every site on the net that uses their services.

It can absolutely be done without Google, Been running a domain and website for ten years without it no problem.
