So here's my question. Since the original source was anonymous (per WaPo), how would you know whether or not your "independent confirmation" was with the person who originated the lie to begin with?
Scenario: Fuchs makes up the lie, and passes it to the WaPo. All the other media outlets move to independently confirm and call around. Fuchs is the only one who'll talk. Fuchs confirms with the requirement of anonymity. Thus, he originates and serves as "independent verification" of his own lie.
