Ohioans denied unemployment assistance because they refused to work at a jobsite that is unsafe from coronavirus will qualify for benefits and back-pay under a change made this week.
The. U.S. Department of Labor issued guidance Thursday, following a directive from President Joe Biden, to state unemployment agencies expanding eligibility in the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program.
The guidance expands eligibility to three categories of workers:
Workers who had their regular unemployment benefits claims denied after they refused to work or to accept an offer of work somewhere not in compliance with coronavirus health and safety standards.
Workers laid off or who had their work hours reduced as a direct result of the pandemic.
School employees working without a contract or reasonable assurance of continued employment whose pay was cut when schools closed due to coronavirus. The determination that a workplace is unsafe will be based on the attestation of the worker, made under risk of perjury...

What about doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, grocery store checkers, gas station workers, etc. etc. who had to work or lose their jobs?

Every flipping public school teacher and gay/lesbian teacher.
The problem wth kicking out normal white guys from every strata of public school education.
Just show them you didn’t work your job because the workplace didn’t provide safety precautions like social distancing, hygiene and protective equipment. Sure. What business or workplace like that would not be closed down, nailed shut and fined out of existence?
Meanwhile I have friends who have been working at Target, Walmart, Sam’s Club, Home Depot...and they have suffered constant anxiety but could not do anything about it. One has a bad skin infection on her face, probably due to the mask. Nobody’s offering them UI. At one store, several employees are now out with active cases of covid, but no one else there can afford to take time off, anxiety or no.
Personally I think the anxiety is unwarranted — they’re mostly younger people — but it is no different than the anxiety of teachers. Well, actually it is different. Teachers deal with children, not adult customers. Chance of catching covid from kids, versus from shoppers.
We are witnessing the government take-over of the Constitution of the United States.
This is beyond stupid. There are going to be loafers who’ll claim “fear” over their whole life and enjoy the beach.
How about health care workers? If I’m afraid to go to work do I get my full salary benefits and retirement to sit home and do nothing??? I suppose I could develop a healthy sense of fear if needed.... retroactive for the last year. This is all about coddling teachers unions while the rest of us suck it up and go to work in far more dangerous circumstances
