A fair point, but by “boring,” I meant no-frills, squared off, ugly, I don’t know how to really quantify it other than my competition-grade 1911 is like driving a Shelby mustang and my glock is more like a honda accord

Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge vs Toyota vs Nissan...

Yes, very similar. One's choice of handgun is very much like their choice of vehicle. Purpose, size, cost, comfort, power, etc.

As an Instructor/Trainer, the subject of best gun comes up all the time amongst both students and other instructors, and the .45 vs 9mm debate rages on. While I dont push anyone towards any particular product, if you ask, I will say that I put the G19 in the top three, with the 1911 also in that group.

That said, the Glock, like Glock copies by other makers, is the closest thing to a revolver (point and click) as one can get. The 1911, is a step more complex, having to incorporate the thumb safety into your training. Its funny how many times I see good shooter, under time pressure or stress training, fail to thumb the safety off on their carry 1911, and have to lose seconds figuring out why the trigger seems so heavy. There are even more complex guns, like the Beretta, which require learning the DA/SA aspects, as well (and I would never recommend the M-9 for defense, terrible design for defensive shooter or dirty environment).

Your Shelby/1911 analogy may be appropriate, but there are faster cars out today than the Shelby. And ‘firstest with the mostest’ is a quality in and of itself. :)

PS - Today, I would add caliber as another factor into ‘best’ gun. But not in the traditional sense of power/penetration. I think today you need at least three calibers (9mm, 40S&W, and 45) just so an ammo famine in one caliber doesnt leave you without options of other more available ammo.

As someone who assisted in defensive classes, you nailed it. Personally, I don’t care for the .40 since it’s overgassed and sometimes crack frames, but it’s one of the most common calibers I used to see, after 9mm and .45. We mostly did rifles but every now and then was handgun defense. My calibers are 7.62x39, 5.45x39, 9mm, .45, and various flavors of 12 gauge in color coded saiga mags. #4 buck, BB, 00, and slugs, generally. All 3”

I went with the 19x for the full size grip. Muzzle flip is negligible. It’s very fast. I have been told to slow down by the range officers more than a few times in fact. It’s back on target so quick though, you just feel compelled to squeeze the trigger. And it still conceals very well.

Reliability is boring. I just point the gun and pull the trigger and it goes bang and hits what I'm aiming at round after round after rounnd regardless of whether I have cleaned it recently, regardless if it has been oiled, regardless if it has been buried in the back yard for 2 years or dropped out of an airplane, regardless of the ammo I have in it, etc. Boooring. Snore.

Can you expound on why you found the Sig was better than the Glock?

I’ve had a Glock 30 (.45 ACP ) for something like 20 years, shot many thousands of rounds thru it, very reliable.

Can you feel a difference between a hammer and a striker? the angle of the grip looks slightly different than my Browning 380 and a lot different than my Warthog. not sure if I could adjust. (old age)

“Can you feel a difference between a hammer and a striker?”

Depends on the guns. A hammer like a Beretta is a long, hardish pull which is fairly consistent from start of the pull to finish when double action, but when the slide cocks the hammer for you after the first shot, it is very light and crisp after. You pull against no resistance until it catches, and then it breaks crisply and cleanly. A hammer which doesn’t cock after each shot is always longish and harder to pull. And you obviously know what a 1911 is like.

Strikers are always the same with every shot, a little lighter than the Double action hammer because a striker gets semi-cocked as the gun cycles, but also a little progressive, in that the pull increases a bit as you pull it until it breaks. Length of travel is a little less than a Double action. The break is kind of a surprise compared to the cleanly breaking single action, as you squeeze, it gets a little heavier and then it goes off. You don’t really take up slack and then it breaks. Jeff Cooper thought that striker trigger was about perfect.

Glocks do point differently, but a lot of pistols do. The advantage to Glock is it is very simple, and cleaning is a breeze because disassembly is simple, there are not a lot of little nooks and complex assemblies that crap gets into, and finishes are also good. I knew one left undealt with for many years with no concern for humidity or environment and it was unoiled. Years later it got a coat of oil, and was for all intents, like it just came off the factory floor.

Personally, I think Glock is about perfect, from design to weight to capacity. But I will say, if I am going to carry all the time, with a very limited chance of using it, I do like a gun you can keep on safe with a double action trigger for the first shot.

I knew a former Delta guy who loved Glocks. Cheap, reliable, and you never felt bad throwing it out the car window if you had to get out of a foreign country in a hurry.
