Have firewood, Woodstove to cook on and a Generator!!!
We went through a night at 8 above with no power. That is the coldest I have ever seen it here in over 50 years.
I put rolled up beach towels on each window sill. Also hang towels from the blinds to make another layer to keep the cold out. My gas water heater never stopped, so I ran hot water through the pipes all night. I have some old school sleeping bags that lay flat and are very warm.
Boy scout and USMC training paid off.
I always boil potatoes during a power outage or when temps fall below zero. It seems to warm up the kitchen faster than an oven.
When the windows get all steamy, you can wash them!
I use a lit incense stick to find air leaks near windows and doors.
Cover the bathtub with a shower curtain when filling it with hot water to keep it hot longer.
Fat candles throw off enough heat to take the chill off.
Do you mean a candle with a large diameter as compared to its height?
Or
Do you mean a candle made from fat - like a Crisco candle such as are peppered all over YouTube Prepper sites?
When this is all over, plan for the next time and prep.
Because there will be a next time. Statistically, it’s going to happen again.
And do it ASAP, while you still have the money, while it’s still worth something, while the stuff is still available, because I’m not confident at all that any of those situations are going to be certain in the not too distant future.
Look into a generator, wood stove, gas cans, firewood, water storage, insulating what can be insulated, fixing windows and doors, etc.
And watch the weather forecasts.
Usually when something major is coming, they give us about a week’s warning. Sometimes it fizzles, but if they are that confident about it, do your grocery shopping and food prep ahead of time. Then you have food ready to eat and just have to reheat it.
Plus you beat the crowds and can actually find what you want to buy instead of looking at stripped bare shelves.
Btw, an ice storm took our our power, so this is coming to you via a small generator and using my cellphone as a hot spot for my laptop. :)
Exactly!
Especially lots and lots of cats."
I'd rather freeze....

Tip #1: Don't Vote Democrat.
Boiling water is a great tip! I’d forgotten that one. It really helps to warm up the kitchen.
We now have a wood burning stove in the new shop building. Problem solved.
Sleep naked as a jaybird and snuggle with a woman who is also naked. This is well documented as the first aid for hypothermia. And at night stuck the feet of your sleeping bag into a plastic trash bag. It’s called a vapor barrier.
Yep. I got it set up about a month ago. I’m successfully heating a “partially insulated” new 50x30x10 sheet metal building with open attic space with one and it’s doing great. It takes a while to get the place really warm, but I’m working in there most of the day quite comfortably in jeans and a sweatshirt.
Yeah, I let my wife talk me out of putting in a wood stove insert in our fireplace, this summer. No comparing a fireplace to a wood stove heater. I’m wishing now I had pushed the idea more. We both learned a lesson.
I fire up my generator
Lol! Some people have to learn the hard way...
And dogs don’t complain.
woof.
