It was sad here in Houston ppl fled their homes for hotels and they had water outages as well as power issues. Our neighbor from Ohio started freaking out and was texting us to let him know when the power was back on by observing his front porch light. He was staying at a lux hotel my husband gave him some &@“t and said do that’s how you handle winter in Ohio?
This guy seems to have lots of money to blow on services from A to Z he ends up using Uber to come back to the house so he could get a wardrobe change. Then he explains that he can’t use his car because it’s behind his automated gate and the power is gone. He ubers back to hotel and we let him know the power is on but for how long??

If you rely on electricity for critical infrastructure, then there should be backup generators. If not, shame on them.

Texas gets 70%+ of it’s power from coal and natural gas, so blaming it on the small % of wind turbines doesn’t make any sense

Most of the problems were equipment failures at gas&coal plants because they saved money and didn’t prepare for this

Truth is good to use.

Good luck with that. Many moving parts to this preventable disaster but it's a lot easier to focus on a single culprit.

From memory, Texas is #1 in wind power and #2 in solar power in the USA.

How much coal, gas, and nuclear back up would they normally have for coal, gas, and nuclear plants that went down during extreme weather?

In other words, does Texas, or any other heavy Green Energy state, have sufficient fossil fuel or nuke back up when Green Energy electric out put drops to 10% of capacity?

Also, no mention of how much solar electric has dropped off in Texas.

How does the northern states and Canada keep the lights on in winter?

We winterized our natural gas pumps. Texas was told to do so in 2012 but never did.

Psaki is rivaling Zuckerburger for most punchable face....

Don't forget Marie Harf. Unlike Zuck, who may be evil but isn't stupid, Psaki and Harf are DUMB.

Your linked article says they recommended implementing measures to prevent the coal/gas shut-down issues after a 2010 cold snap had a similar effect, but that they haven’t yet done the upgrades.

So after 10 years nothing has been done? Why should anyone expect them to do anything now?

These plants could adapt for cold much easier than they can adapt windmills and solar for ice and snow.

Countries like Canada, Norway, and Sweden get about as much of their electricity from solar and wind as Texas does, if not more. Their winters are a whole lot worse than what Texas went through and they don't have a problem because it's possible to install wind generators that operate in icy and cold conditions, if you are willing to make the investment. Obviously Texas chose to make renewable sources a big part of their power plan but were not willing to spend what it took to make sure it could operate in worse case scenarios.

Re: "Texas was told to winterize their natural gas pumps in 2012 but never did."

Told by whom?

We have allegedly just come through the hottest decade on Planet Earth since the last Ice Age began about 120,000 years ago.

Why would they winterize in a climate regime like that?

“Why would they winterize in a climate regime like that?”

Because back in 2011 or 2012 Texas experienced a similar cold snap though not as bad and were told to winterize.

Texas has a huge amount of natural gas from the Permian Basin. That should have been used to operate power plants to back up all that renewable energy rendered useless by the unprecedented cold (the ice storms shut down all the wind turbines and made roof solar panels just about useless).

Having grown up with a coal-fired furnace, we always had a problem when the temp was near zero outside and, inside the furnace, both the coal & flames froze solid...

As kids we used to have frozen coal-fire fights instead of snowball fights....

Good thing these brilliant, big mouthed, lesbo bitches like Pissaki were not around then...

Why do the wind turbines in North Dakota work and those in Texas do not. North Dakota winters are like this every year.

Renewables in the Upper Midwest--especially wind turbines--have to be made "proof" against total shutdown in really bad winter conditions. That's a problem that Europe is dealing with right now with many of their wind turbines out of service due really bad winter conditions.
