Deconstructing Racism in Mathematics Instruction
White supremacy culture infiltrates math classrooms in everyday teacher actions. Coupled with the beliefs that underlie these actions, they perpetuate educational harm on Black, Latinx, and multilingual students, denying them full access to the world of mathematics.The table below identifies the ways in which white supremacy shows up in math classrooms.
Dismantling white supremacy in math classrooms
We see white supremacy culture show up in the mathematics classroom even as we carry out our professional responsibilities outlined in the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP). Using CSTPas a framework, we see white supremacy culture in the mathematics classroom can show up when:
• The focus is on getting the “right” answer.
• Independent practice is valued over teamwork or collaboration.
• “Real-world math” is valued over math in the real world.
• Students are tracked (into courses/pathways and within the classroom).
• Participation structures reinforce dominant ways of being.
Sounds like a self fulfilling prophecy.
This was covered in “1984” when Winston was convinced (the hard way) that we don’t have the freedom to believe 2 + 2 = 4.

This is stupid and it needs to be shut down.
I’d take white supremacy over woke nitwitology any day.
These people are why the Chicago Annenburg Challenge grant, with over a hundred million of other people’s swag to help the state of education in Chicago, achieved bupkis. Even a lawyer like Obama should have known that remedial education does good things and so he and the rest should be without excuse that they did everything but.

Back when I was teaching physics, one of my supervisors told me not to correct wrong answers in classroom discussions. Because that would stifle creativity. Instead, accept all answers. And maybe correct them later in the week.
I ignored that directive. It was a waste of time. And it would have my students leaving my classroom thinking wrong answers were actually right. That’s really not the way to train future engineers.
Fortunately for me, I was never caught disobeying that directive. That supervisor moved on, to be replaced by a different supervisor spouting different goofy directives.
My Filipino bud told me last year his kid in a LAUSD school was upset because EVERYONE got a passing grade, including the idiots below his kid in intelligence and the class troublemakers. The school officials stated it’s racist to fail a student. Yup, they used the word racist.
Back in the Philippines, the schooling is mostly private and the schools put rightful pressure on students or else they have to pay the same tuition AGAIN if/when they fail, with parents who are at the poverty line.
They can profess and believe anything they want to believe. I will believe what I know to be true, part of which is that they are evil and crazy.
The answer is whatever you want it to be.
