Cynthia Walker isn't used to doing things on her own. But when she walked into a North Carolina Chick-fil-A and ordered herself a meal by signing her order, it became the first time she was able to do it on her own without feeling uncomfortable.
That cashier doesn’t just know sign language.
She’s fluent.
What a great video.
Heartwarming!
Very sweet.
When I was a junior in high school, a family moved in next door...Their 12 year old daughter was deaf and even though there was several kids in the neighborhood her age, she had no one to “talk” with...
I studied the sign alphabet on my own and I started signing to her spelling out words...
She got this look of total surprise on her face and began to cry and jumped over and hugged my neck....
THAT was one of the greatest moments of my life and I am now 72 years old...
God bless you!
I have a granddaughter who began teaching her firstborn to sign. Neither is deaf, but it’s just something she wanted to do with her children. She learned it in highschool..like a second language.
A deaf woman from Latvia, worked with my wife (wedding gowns). My wife took classes, to accommodate the other gal.
Love that movie, love that scene.
Sweet
I watched the YouTube video and, I gotta say, I kind of choked up.
Nice feeling from that. Thanks for posting.
A self-serve kiosk would’ve also taken care of the order without the person needing any help.
Of course, I wouldn’t know CFA’s current setup because I haven’t been there in a couple of years.
Unless you like a curt and surly staff serving you overpriced food filled with sodium, fat and chemicals, you haven't missed anything.
Not to take away from this wonderful post...
In a CFA drive-thru 2-4-21, when I ask how much it was the girl said ‘nothing.’
They were giving out free orders. I’m sure not to everyone, but we just happened to be lucky. It was only 5.30 tho. That might have had something to do with it, yet is was a nice gesture. They have so many customers, they don’t need to do that, but still....
So, the young girl who knew sign and waited on the handicapped girl was “curt and surly”....
Depends on which CFA you went to. Not all CFA’s have the same ‘staff’.
Sorry yours sucked. Mine is great.
The chicken is a little salty to my liking, but that’s what sells to most people.
The tea is great.
Most servers are young and inexperienced, but so are most people anywhere one shops. They phone it in, as we say. When I worked, I got into it. Kids today, do not!
“...like a second language.”
My kids both sign. They learned it from a baby sitter we used for a couple of years while the wife and I worked.
A couple of years after that, we were in a restaurant on a Saturday night and the financial boss’s secretary was across the room. Apparently her daughter was deaf and my kids had an extended conversation with her from our table about 50 feet away.
On Monday the secretary grabbed me on the way by and asked if my kids were hearing impaired. I told her no, they learned sign as a second language because they wanted to learn it. She asked if I signed and I said no, I have a difficult enough time trying to figure out spoken language. She laughed, but I never had a problem getting funds available for anything I needed after that.

When the kiddos got to high school, I insisted they learn a second language. — beside English.
The oldest son learned Russian, the youngest, Japanese.
My daughter - ASL.
She has landed at least two jobs for being ‘bi-lingual’.
