CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As people prepare to get vaccinated, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), the Mecklenburg County Health Department and the Rowan County Health Department have released information on the possible side effects of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

[ ALSO READ: County-by-county guide: Here’s when, where you can get the COVID-19 vaccine ]

Here is what NCDHHS has to say about the differences between the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines:

Content Continues Below The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines work the same way to prevent people from getting COVID-19. In addition, both vaccines require two doses and both are very effective in preventing someone from getting COVID-19. The clinical trial showed no serious safety concerns.

The vaccines are stored differently. The Moderna vaccine does not need to be stored as cold as the Pfizer vaccine, so more providers will be able to easily use it. While both vaccines require two doses, the time between doses is different. The Moderna vaccine doses are given 4 weeks apart. The Pfizer vaccine doses are given 3 weeks apart. Who can get the vaccine is also different. The Moderna vaccine is authorized for adults aged 18 and older. The Pfizer vaccine is authorized for people aged 16 and older.

The temporary reactions are similar for both vaccines. Temporary reactions may include a sore arm, headache and feeling tired and achy for a day or two after receiving the vaccine. More people who were in the Moderna clinical trial experienced these temporary reactions. The reactions are more common after the second dose than the first dose. Younger people are more likely to have reactions than older people. Neither vaccine can give you COVID-19.

Good luck. If you’re making a follow-up list, please put me on it.

I’m 70 and have underlying medical problems. If I get COVID, it would probably be fatal, so I’m leaning toward getting the vaccine.

my wife is 64 but has underlying medical conditions too and she is reasoning the same as you. I can respect that. I am in good health so I’m going to wait.

I think vaccine is the lesser risk. Millions already vaccinated in United States and I have not heard of any mass of serious problems. There are always exceptions. I am sure a few die every year from the flu vaccine as well. But many more avoid the flu from the vaccine. So the odds usually favor getting vaccinated.

Look for my follow up next Thursday morning, a week after getting vaccinated tomorrow. If my follow up is missing it means the vaccine finished me off LOL.

Hope all goes well for you and your wife. Surprised that age and your wife’s health didn’t get you in earlier but each state is different.
I am in the Moderna study and don’t know yet whether I got the vaccine or placebo but will find out in a few days. My arm was sore after the first shot like from a tetanus shot but no reaction after the second shot.

The risk of immediate side effects from the “vaccine” is most likely to be less than the risks from actually getting the virus and getting sick. HOWEVER, the main risk from the “vaccine” is unkown at this time — it is the possibility that a subsequent infection with the real virus later could be catastrophic due to ADE (look it up, it’s worth your time and attention), or that there are long-term effects that won’t be apparent for years.

Everything in life is a trade off — you have to make your own choices. I’m not in a position to offer advice to anyone, as I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night...

Glad you were able to get an appointment. I rec’d the second Moderna done yesterday. Yes, arm is sore like a flu shot. I had a barely noticeable headache for about two minutes yesterday and today we are taking it easy, did a stroll instead of quick-walk will probably take a nap.

Compared to what people I know are going thru in trying to recover, the vaccine for us is a piece of cake. Good luck.

You are right, there is risk in any medical procedure.
More people die in hospitals than auto accidents. Does that mean we should avoid hospitals? Of course not. We just have to play the odds.

I am depending on all the “scientists” and testing done with these covid vaccines. At my age past 80, if I get get infected with covid-19, I will be in dire straits. So at surface value, vaccine seems to be the better option.

Actually I am 99% certain I already have some immunity from covid-19 having done a cruise on a fully sold out ship at end of February 2020. After disembarking I had this strange dry cough for 10-12 days. And it went away without any medical treatment. The best way to build immunity to any virus is to get a mild exposure often. Hiding in basement you will have zero immunity and then a significant exposure can make you very sick.

LOL. There is no DNA in the vaccines. None.
It’s mRNA based. And goes nowhere near the cell nucleus.
Don’t want the vaccine?
Don’t get it. More for my family to get vaccinated.
But don’t spread lies.

Sure beats the hell out of dying from Covid19.

My wife and I both got the Pfizer shot. NO SIDE EFFECTS AT ALL AFTER EACH SHOT. We got the second shot three weeks ago. We are both over 70.

Thank you and I am expecting similar experience as yours.
My savior is daily treadmill covering one mile distance at 2.5 degrees up-slope. It is keeping me alive and avoiding heart problems. All my uncles and father died of heart attacks before reaching age 70. I am still here at age 80.
