Earlier this year, Anisha Patel, a Stanford University pediatrics professor, started to notice a troubling trend: Child patients at the Atherton California clinic where she works have gained a distressing amount of weight.
Since the spring, she says, her patients’ growth curves, which track body mass index, have climbed their clinical charts steeply. In a matter of months, many kids’ chartlines raced past the 85th percentile, which means a patient is overweight. Today, most have broken into the 95th percentile, which is when a child becomes clinically obese. The pattern is so common, Patel says, “that when we do see patients that aren’t on that trajectory, we’re actually kind of surprised.”
It’s not just her. Angela Goepferd, a pediatrician at Children’s Minnesota, a hospital in Minneapolis, says children at her outpatient clinic frequently weigh 10 or 20 pounds more than they did in March. Lisa Denike, the chief of pediatrics at Northwest Permanente in Portland, Oregon, estimates that one-third of her patients have become overweight or obese over the same period....

1) School lunch programs may be the lesser of two evils if the other evil is kids being holed up at home and missing a year's worth of education and socialization. Not everyone's parents are as capable of people on this board of doing the homeschool thing well.
(Granted more school choice, home schooling options, greater local control of schools, and a number of other things would be a better option, but .... see point #2)
2) I post things like this sometimes because points can be made to your liberal (who are more persuadable than leftist) friends and family who support the lockdowns and don't see some of the consequences. These people may not support school choice/parental responsibility over public schools, but they may support kids being in an environment where in many ways it is better than being at home.
2B or not 2B essential
Why single out the kids most everyone is fatter after sitting around doing nothing..
Bad link.
It’s just one more data point about how much of a disaster government policy has been this past year and how the “experts” care not for the law of unintended consequences.
In 2008, Biden predicted Obama would face an early crisis, these Democrats have had the virus in their back pocket since then.
Sorry. I must have had a 2nd FR tab open.
Try this.

I’m so confused! There is a child obesity crisis! Children everywhere are in a food crisis and going hungry! Which leftist crisis, if either, is real? If both are real, the leftist answer would be to take away food from the fat kids and give it to the skinny ones, but really, their solution is always tax whitey more and take away control from parents and give it to the rightful ownership of the government.
Keep a spreadsheet of your health metrics.
Treadmill: L3 S3 20 minutes
Heart rate max: 102
Calories burned: 106
Distance: .9 mile
Oximeter: 96/88 (after workout)
B.P. 158/77/80 (after workout and coffee earlier)
Weight: 168.6
Height: 6’
stay healthy, stay alive. examine where your food comes from.
I will take this as a sign that I should get off the computer for a while and tackle some neglected chores.
I asked for it to be fixed.

I’m semi retired. I moved my office to my house in Jan 2019. I gained 40 lbs in 2 years from working at home.

The same experts who caused the obesity epidemic will recommend more of the same. Moar grains! Moar “cardio!”
People aren’t fat because they are inactive, they are inactive because they are fat. They are fat because they eat too much. They eat too much because they eat foods that don’t satisfy their appetites.
Going to the park and playing will help children. So will going to the park and reading a book. Know what they don’t do at the park? Eat 3 bags of chips and down a gallon of cola.
No!! Not The White Castle! Call out the National Guard!
The UN Blue Helmets too.
As someone born and raised between Michigan and Ohio, I consider the White Castle to be a National Treasure.
Certainly not on the scale of the Grand Canyon, but...
Alas, I am ‘stranded’ in California, thus there are no
White Castles anywhere, anywhere at all.
I guess you always want what you cannot have.
Same here. I fully retired after 9/11..
I moved my office in my house to my lazy boy chair in our family room. I gained 30 lbs in 2 years.
My wife retired and went from her wedding weight to 30+ pounds in 6 months. She fixed every gourmet meal that sounded good to her or me.
Then, her meals went from very gourmet to good, (Paleo and Mediterranean). The best thing she did was to put fresh fruit and mixed nuts out in the open on the first kitchen counter when you go into our kitchen. So our snacks are health. We don’t count calories. In 6 months after these changes, I lost my 30 pounds. She is back to her wedding weight.
She also basically eliminated carb snacks and carb side dishes.
We are back to walking after I became old 9 toes.
1- Get out of the freaking house
2- Go out with your friends and play and get off the stupid video games
3- Stop eating garbage food and start eating healthy
That’s what I tell my kids all the time
Ones pretty chunky. ones regular
Remember that before kids get to be full size and height ; they need lots of calories because they’re growing like weeds!
I wonder if it will be revealed someday that being outside in the fresh air is one of the most important ways to stay healthy and not succumb to the C-virus. Instead people were told to stay inside.
You don’t get PE or recess with “remote learning”.
