I know a couple of people who have tried to purchase firearms in the past six months. The FBI just never runs the check and it eventually expires and you have to start over. Won’t matter though. They already decided you are not getting a gun.

I thought the law was that if they don’t respond in time, the sale was permitted..
No, If the FFL dealer conducts the NICS check, three results can be returned. 1. Proceed. 2. DO NOT Proceed. 3. Hold.
The first two are obvious. The last, “Hold” means that if the FBI doesn’t respond with either Proceed or Do Not proceed with 72 hrs., the FFL is instructed to complete the sale and record that expired time on the 4473.
There is never no response.
It used to be that if they don’t turn you down within a certain amount of time, the FFL dealer can complete the sale. That’s what happened with Dillon Roof.
