REVIEW: Wonder Woman 1984

Back in 2017 when Wonder Woman came out my first reaction was that DC needed to give Patty Jenkins the keys to their movie-making department and let her run all of the franchises. That movie was that good. I’ve just finished watching Wonder Woman 1984. My first reaction?

We should take those keys back.

It is the cultural yearning for heroes in a society that has gutted religion and torn down real-life icons.

It was egregious to cover up someone as beautiful as Gal Gadot in ugly yellow plastic armor.

That’s funny about the clothes. As someone who was in their 20’s in the eighties I turned to my wife said said, everyone dressing in the 80’s was not a stereo type: My jeans and polo shorts are not that different.

"I always liked Chris Pine’s mischievous attitude..."

Yeah, that did him well in Star Trek. However, if you want to see what acting chops he has, "Hell or High Water" is it. Plus Jeff Bridges' and Ben Foster's parts were well done and it's not a super-hero movie. Just a couple ole Texas boys robbing branches of one main bank that is trying foreclose on their family ranch. The ending dialog between Pine and Bridges is worth the admission. Maybe not an original concept, but a few surprises and great direction. Check it out.

"But the script must have had 20 hands in it. And the director was shooting all of the different re-writes."

I, and now my wife have often picked up on your points above. It's the difference between a mediocre director and great director. I can't say how many times a scene could have been cut to create a better flow of the story.

It's a shame that most movie fans don't get the difference in directors. The reason our favorite TV series is SEAL TEAM is that everything works every time. Another series is Yellowstone, although they have such long breaks between their seasons. Doesn't start up again until June. Also, we've been binging on the Netflix series, LONGMIRE.

Didn't know it existed until the wife bought Netflix. We have spent entire days starting from season 1 to get caught up. It has no commercials where you can see and hear from the music there would be a commercial insert. It's seamless. It also goes from one episode to another with pushing just one button to continue. Really worth checking out if you have Netflix. Just be prepared to stop shaving, doing lawn work, etc., it's that addictive.

I've lost most interest in super-hero movies. It's always whiz bang destroy cities or fighting evil ET. Marvel and DC don't build their characters enough, except for maybe the first Iron Man. Even in the Avengers movies, his character was the only one I found interesting.

Superman vs Batman was a stupid concept. Batman was pissed because Supy had to fight General Zod and destroyed much of Metropolis - like Supy had a choice. The Justice League was lame once they revived Superman. All these super-heroes go over the top and geared towards young male adults.

I kinda like Wonder Woman with the romance and the WWI battle lines.

Want to see a well-acted, directed, and produced non-super hero with Chris Pine? Check out "Hell or High Water" It's a small movie and very entertaining.

Have watched about 1 hours of this thing and it is pretty lame. The plot is so ridicules.

It almost looks like Patty Jenkins watched all the old Wishmaster Horror films and ripped the plot from there, and believe me the Wishmaster series, while low budget, was actually not bad, my favorite is Wishmaster II.

How do you spend all that money and come up with story line like they did. Poor Patty she just isn’t a very good writer.

Watched WW84 last night on HBO Max. It was everything I expected it to be, which wasn't much. I don't really care for comic book movies but my wife likes them.

Lynda Carter has a brief cameo during the credits.

I was shocked at how good she still looks. She's 69 years old.

No one is going to go see a Steve Trevor movie....

There is a reason even WB hasn’t been stupid enough to have a robin movie.... or a Lois Lane movie.... or a Pepper Pots movie..

Sidekicks don’t draw...

You can have limited run comics that tell those sorts of
Stories and not lose money, but you won’t see a movie made about them.. at least not a theatrical release movie. Maybe a streaming service one

Chris Pine was also good in the Finest Hours about a sea rescue, based on a true story.

Never heard of it - I'll try to find it.

[I am watching g it now.

Don’t bother. It is horrible. Just horrible.

And I love “Superhero” movies. This one is just bad.]

And yet it beat both expectations and the first movie’s opening (when adjusted for available screens due to the pandemic). It did better than a Christopher Nolan extravaganza that was much anticipated. That this schlock managed the numbers it did points, IMHO, to huge pent-up demand for the resumption of social events like movie-going, indoor-dining and mall-walking.

You are exactly correct.

During the past several weeks I’ve been disappointed with many of the newer shows that have come out.

I am convinced that the lack of a “writer’s room” has a lot to do with it. Being stuck, in person, with other people trying to pound a project results in a better product. As examples there have been hideous episodes of SVU and Grey’s Anatomy (which were borderline horrible BEFORE). Those shows are literally unwatchable.

I know many of these shows were written before the pandemic—and honestly, that disappoints me. Because that just means the talent pool is really drying up.

I don’t know if they have changed...or if my expectations are just too high?
