The dust has settled and the evidence is in: The 1960s Great Society and War on Poverty programs of President Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) have been a colossal and giant failure. One might make the argument that social welfare programs are the moral path for a modern government. They cannot, however, make the argument that these are in any way effective at alleviating poverty.
In fact, there is evidence that such aggressive programs might make generational poverty worse. While the notion of a “culture of dependence” is a bit of a cliché in conservative circles, there is evidence that this is indeed the case – that, consciously or not, the welfare state creates a culture where people receive benefits rather than seeking gainful employment or business ownership.
This is not a moral or even a value judgment against the people engaged in such a culture. Again, the claim is not that people “choose to be on welfare,” but simply that social welfare programs incentivize poverty, which has an impact on communities that has nothing to do with individual intent.
We are now over 50 years into the development of the Great Society and the War on Poverty. It is time to take stock in these programs from an objective and evidence-based perspective. When one does that, it is not only clear that the programs have been a failure, but also that they have disproportionately impacted the black community in the United States. The current state of dysfunction in the black community (astronomically high crime rates, very low rates of home ownership and single motherhood as the norm) are not the natural state of the black community in the United States, but closely tied to the role that social welfare programs play.

they increase evil thinking it will bring about more good
nope
and before anyone b1tches and says we have arguments that take things to their logical extremes to illustrate absurdity
illustrating absurdity in an argument/discussion is not the same as implementing policies that actually promote the absurdity occurring in real life
The White elites now are the same slaveholders they were before.
Sounded like Abrams in that clip.
The author needs a dictionary. “Inadvertently” does NOT mean “on purpose”.
Sen Moynihan said that’s exactly what would happen. And he was a dim.
Social conservatives believe that welfare encourages moral decline.
Libertarians believe that welfare is not one of the required duties of a minimal state.
Neoconservatives ran the numbers and made a scientific case for welfare having the opposite effect of that claimed.
Even National Defense conservatives were against welfare as it took funds away from the Military Industrial Complex, either that or put us in debt which is a bad position for a state to be in militarily.
So even though this is one issue where all conservatives and even most Republicans agree, nothing has been accomplished. In the irony department, we have the case where the only attempt to reform welfare happened during the Clinton administration.
The Republican Party is officially a complete failure. If they have been unable to eliminate, or at least keep in check, welfare programs that they all agree are doing more harm than good, then they need to apologize, close up shop, and wait for a true conservative party to take over.
America does not need a carbon copy of England's useless Tory Party.
Nothing about it was “inadvertent.”
Some of my friends became doctors , vets , nurses, etc. One owns a local newspaper company.
It was a great place until Johnson. Even at a young age , I noticed the difference in some of our neighbors after Johnson's policies. Their apartments were actually smelly. The laundry that was hung out on lines was not clean..at all.
Johnson's policies harmed white and black people.
It was on purpose. Johnson was purported to say that he would have blacks voting democrat for the next 200 years.
LBJ was the biggest slave owner of all time.
Right
EVERY govt programs causes more problems than they solve. let the Invisible Hand take care of things..................
Started with FDR. LBJ just pedal-to-the-metalled it.
The rest was inevitable.
The Dems are a "gift" that keeps on "giving".
Who’s gonna pull the rug out from under these bribes?
When the money runs out.
Rome went down this path. Bread and Circus to keep the voters docile. It worked for awhile, but not even the Roman Empire could create enough wealth to sustain a welfare program forever. Eventually the money stream dried up and Rome fell.
It would appear that many of us had the same immediate thought.
:D
Drop “inadvertently.” It was done with full awareness, so as to keep Blacks down and poor, so they would always vote democrat.
“inadvertently”
Uh Huh.
I doubt it was inadvertent!
