For decades China-watchers have debated what form a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) offensive against Taiwan might take. An onslaught seems to be coming. Saying no to a cross-strait union is not an option Chinese Communist Party (CCP) supremo Xi Jinping means to grant the islanders. Beijing wrote its threat to use force into law back in 2005. Xi regularly reminds everyone that the party’s patience is finite. It seems the only question is timing.
Nor, however, is Xi likely to cow Taipei officialdom or ordinary folk into submission. Taiwanese are not obtuse. They saw what happened in Hong Kong last summer, when Beijing enacted a national security law summarily revoking the city’s status as a liberal democratic enclave in a totalitarian state. They know a similar fate awaits them should they capitulate to blandishments from Xi & Co.
Nor are they likely to be gulled by mainland sloganeering. Beijing deploys formulas like “peaceful unification” in an effort to lull inhabitants of lands it covets into complying with its wishes. Well, sure. Submitting meekly to conquest is peaceful. It’s the kind of cost-free peace aggressors adore. Meanwhile the CCP’s “one state, two systems” formula assures prospective new subjects they can keep their system more or less intact if they accept union with China.

Hong Kong’s fate will only steel the resolve of Taiwan; the US should have never betrayed them.
I expect soon after Trump has left office.

Taiwan better be ready for the fight. They’re not likely to get much help from the US. We are either going to be under CCP control through the Obama-controlled Biden/Harris puppet gov’t or we’re going to be embroiled in a slow-rolling civil war.
Taiwan better be praying for President Trump, because kamala and Beijing Joe won't lift a finger to help them.
I predict those with the means to do so are going to start to bug out of Taiwan en masse.
I don’t see how we could have gone to war with China over Hong Kong. The Writing on the wall for that city was so clear there.
There literally was no interest in going to a hot nuclear war over that place. Because if we throw down with China it will be nuclear.
I should have been clear; we betrayed Taiwan by recognizing Red China (we owe nothing to Hong Kong, except maybe a safe place for the Vietnamese that fled there).
The Chinese Communists are very reluctant to take heavy casualties taking Taiwan. The ranks of the PLA are filled with “one child” soldiers. Heavy casualties will result in a huge, possibly uncontrollable political backlash. China will do all it can to ensure that Taiwan will not fight and will peacefully agree to reunification.
The criminal democrat duo will no doubt give the Chinese everything on Taiwan within a few hours.
Betrayed Hong Kong?!?!
Ridiculous.
The US had no obligation to Hong Kong whatsoever. None.
Biden won't lift a finger and they won't test Trump.
I’ve done a fair bit of wargaming.
How would this play out?
China can huff and puff until they fall over.
What is the reality of the situation?
Does China need Taiwan?
Does China even really want Taiwan?
How much would they be willing to lose to conquer Taiwan?
What would be the ramifications if China did conquer Taiwan.
Talk is cheap and thinking is hard.
See # 9; I clarified that I was referring to Taiwan, and agree that we owe nothing to Hong Kong. Even England was just abiding by the terms of its original agreement when it left Hong Kong a century later.
Time to develop some nuclear weapons or let it be known that they have them, informaly of course.
No doubt, and get 10% from them for "The Big Guy".
How are Taiwan’s relations with Japan? I know they have been really bad in the past. If Taiwan falls to China, Japan will be close to, if not on the top of the list for China. China has been ramping up anti-Japanese anger for a long time now. The CCP doesn’t do anything without a reason. Will Japan aid Taiwan or sit it out?
By treaty we do.
