Why China Cannot Conquer Taiwan Without a Bloody Fight
The National Interest ^ | 12/2/2020 | Kris Osborn

China is again threatening Taiwan with amphibious attack through a series of live-fire maritime warfare operations. Those military exercises utilized Type 022 stealth missile boats, Type 071 amphibious dock landing ships and landing craft. All of those units operated in tandem to demonstrate assault landing operational exercises.

China has more bodies to throw at Taiwan. Simple case of attrition.

If I were the PRC, I would make threats and build up my armed forces and force Taiwan to match my spending and equipage.
With a little luck that military buildup will damage Taiwan’s economy badly enough to make the government unpopular and create a tolerance for being absorbed into PRC.
Unfortunately, with Hong Kong’s example, the Taiwanese know that any promises the PRC gives them are not worth the paper (or electrons) they’re written on.

If I was Taiwan, I’d have torpedo bases ready to sink 350 Chinese naval ships and 200,000 chinese fishing boats.

China could do it but it would cost them dearly. China is already on everyone’s chit list because of covid and their constant intellectual property stealing. Now they want a huge foo faw raw played out for a month on the world stage? Probably not.

iF I were Taiwan, I'd have a giant radioactive amphibious sea monster that breathes fire and tears the hsit out of stuff when he's angry.

Generally he'd just hide out down in the ocean being his own surly self, but if he gets pissed off... it's a good idea to not be there.

That's what I'd do.

They may indeed flood the waters with bodies, but not enough to walk over. Its not a lack of army holding them back but a lack of navy I suspect.

The attrition rate crossing the straits would be horrendous.

Without a bloody fight?

They don’t have the ability.

They can destroy Taiwan, but they cannot occupy it.

The can destroy Taiwan and they can occupy it. And, no one can stop them or get them off of the island when they're ready to take it. So much ignorance and disinformation out there. Wow.

Be a damn shame if all those Chinese Generals had their mansions and luxury cars destroyed in a war.

Agree. But when you have 1 billion + people you can “afford” a high attrition rate.

Silly article. China will not try a long distance Dday invasion. They have more sophisticated plans in store and with Bidens’ weak hand on the US military, they will have every reason to be optimistic.

Taiwan has flat told china-”If you invade the first thing we will do is take out the Three Gorges Dam”. Do the math.

100 million dead chinese, major bread basket area destroyed. 30% of more of the chinese power grid destroyed.

Why would China even want Taiwan?

Is it because they think that Taiwan must be communist so that China can become even more communist?

Chinese communists like wealth.

Chinese communists like being tyrants.

China is already gaining a lot of hatred in this world for their treatment of Uighurs and Africans.

Nobody is going to deal fairly with a regime of slavemasters.

"China is again threatening Taiwan with amphibious attack through a series of live-fire maritime warfare operations."

Good luck with that.

Taiwan Strait

"The Taiwan Strait, also known as the Formosa Strait, is a 180-kilometer (110 mi)-wide strait separating Taiwan and mainland China. The strait is currently part of the South China Sea and connects to the East China Sea to the north. The narrowest part is 130 km (81 mi) wide.[1] "

As a point of comparison, the English Channel is 21 miles wide at the widest point.
