....Now we are beginning to see more issues arising, as the mental health impact of the lockdowns is being seen. Reports are coming out of Japan that their suicide rate has spiked to a tremendous level as that country is in strong lockdown conditions. In the month of October the nation recorded over 2,100 people who had taken their own life. That monthly figure exceeds the total of all Covid deaths Japan has experienced this year, which numbers less than 2,000.
While the Center For Disease Control has been very up to date with U.S. records concerning the Covid pandemic, the suicide recording is lagging. However there are indications of the severity of the lockdowns on the national psyche. Start with the fact the CDC has recorded that over the past two decades the number of suicides in the U.S. has increased by 35%. The impacts of a lockdown — anxiety, isolation, unemployment, financial stress, etc. — are sure to raise that stress....

4 AND A HALF TATAMI ROOMS WILL DO THAT.
I thought they didn’t lockdown?
Sorry bout the caps.
Japan has always had an elevated suicide rate, as a consequence of being a highly competitive honor culture.
Look up Aokigahara.
“...as that country is in strong lockdown conditions.”
This is not correct. Everything is running normally here. All stores, bars, restaurants are open. Everything is normal on the street. There are some guidelines that can be followed voluntarily, but I haven’t seen any effect. There were a few weeks months ago where there was a voluntary lockdown due to guidelines, and many businesses did take a one or two week holiday to support the government recommendations, but then they got fed up with it, because it is stupid, and everything is normal. Bars are full, restaurants are full, the streets are full of people. All stores are open and doing business as normal. I even went to a heavy metal concert last weekend.
The stress is caused mostly by people getting nagged at by their husbands or wives because they don’t know how to “work from home” because they don’t know how to be flexible.
Most schools are doing online courses, but that’s easy for lazy teenagers and college kids.
I assume there are some other stresses for parents with young kids, but I haven’t checked to see what is happening with elementary schools.
The Japanese, culturally speaking, tend to be a race of isolationists.
I’m not sure why that is.
“Bars are full, restaurants are full, the streets are full of people.”
My frat mate teaches English there, and said the same thing. We have it ass backwards here..
Japan had its issues with suicide long before the pandemic. Search for “suicide forest”.

The Japanese seem to have a weird penchant for suicide, especially when an uncommon form of suicide makes headlines, which is followed by a lot of copycats.

Correct and greets from Kumamoto . Yes there are assholes who wear masks when alone in their cars , jogging or walking but that is voluntary action . Markets ask patrons to wear a mask but I doubt anyone would force one to wear one . Compared to the USA , Japan is freedom city . Hey - I can even walk down the street and drink a beer or sake hehe ...
I meant that what you wrote was “ correct “ .
Kumamoto ping

Island country. Everything outside is foreign to them.
No only:
>Japan Is Only One Country Where the Lockdowns Suicide Rate Is Outpacing the Pandemic. One in 4 young adults have struggled with suicidal thoughts since the coronavirus hit, CDC says. Washington Post ^ | November 23, 2020 | William Wan
The above from WaPO are in addition to reports such as “Calls to suicide and help hotline in Los Angeles increase 8,000% due to coronavirus,”[124] and “Doctors at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek say they have seen more deaths by suicide during this quarantine period than deaths from the COVID-19 virus,”[125] In addition to which are greatly increased drug overdoses and deaths during COVID.[126] [127]As well as well as significant rise in divorces. [128]
Also, according to one meta-analysis of 42 studies involving 20 million people, the risk of death increases 63 percent when one loses their job, and that for every one percentage point increase in the unemployment rate, there are 37,000 deaths, mainly from heart attacks, but another 1,000 from suicides and another 650 from homicides.[122]
