Vanity - Looking for a Compounding Pharmacy
Nov 13, 2020 | Self

I am on a very expensive medication for my mast cell disorder.

It was paid for almost fully by our health insurance. I just had a small co-pay for every order.

Well, I was forced onto Medicare when I turned 65 and the prescription plan is killing us. The medication is almost full cost, but, I am assured, the bright side is that once I have spent $5,000 in prescription costs, everything is then *free*.

The doctors have told me that like I'm supposed to be excited about spending 5K on drugs per year just to supposedly get free stuff after that.

I don't think I've spent that much on all my prescriptions altogether for the last 15 years.

Anyways, I understand from others with mast cell disorders, that I can have it compounded much cheaper than through Medicare. But I need to find a compounding pharmacy that does mail order.

Does anyone out there have experience with compounding pharmacies or know of any?

I would greatly appreciate the information. Thanks for your input.

The one person who mentioned it lived in OHIO and got it there, but the cost she was able to pay was only available for Ohio residents, so that one is not going to work for me.

Search “compounding pharmacies near me”. Call a few and see what you can get.

Do you have Medicare Plan D for prescriptions? It’s around $34 per month IIRC.

It would help to know the name of the drug and dosage: Might try Carey Boyd pharmacy in IrvingTx. Or Grapevine Drug Mart in Grapevine Tx. (As for Novell, or Jody).

Yes. Mine is through Humana and is just a bit less, but it still has the “donut hole” problem.

Thus the $5,000 cost.

My last Epi pen prescription was almost $300.

I use this one:

Wauconda Pharmacy

You also may want to check the Canadian pharmacies too.

I have a really expensive drug for liver failure. With insurance it would be about $2000 a month. My brother-in-law told me about The Pharm Store. I get 200 pills for $200. Same pill.

Thanks!

I knew I could count on FReepers.

I did find a couple places near me that say they do it so I’ll be checking them out. Personal visit and talk with the pharmacist kind.

I want to get some prices and see how much they vary.

I will call the others and see what the mail order is like and how their prices compare.

Did you try contacting the drug manufacturer directly? Most of them have coupon programs and the like for those who can’t afford the medicatiobs

FWIW, put safety and efficacy considerations first.

I’ve found big variability with pet meds.

My local pharmacy has a compounding room enclosed in glass so customers can watch. They specialize in unusual prescriptions, or so I was told.

It has been family owned for many decades.

The name is Brighton Pharmacy on Brighton Road in Tonawanda NY.
