The hatred of men embedded in modern feminism is evil.
From what I can see of Annie Oakley she was a champion of personal freedom for herself as a woman but not a hater of men.
Should we embrace her as a role model today?
Cleopatra, Boudica, Bloody Mary or Queen Liz 1 do nicely as role models... Feminism is a purely Americanized phenomena. Woman have been running things very nicely in other parts of the world for eons.
She would shoot Left wing rioters and looters on sight ... so thats a plus!
I watched the Annie Oakley show when I was a young girl. I had an Annie Oakley fringed skirt, vest and hat. I played at being Annie Oakley all the time. Now I have young granddaughters - I’m going to see what Annie Oakley books I can find for them.
In 1890, Annie was performing in Berlin where among the audience was Friedrich Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor (Kaiser) and King of Prussia. He was a great admirer of Oakleys performances who previously had been to several runs of the show.
During the show, Annie asked a for a volunteer to accept risking his life by holding a cigarette in his mouth from which she would attempt to shoot the ashes. She did this regularly while performing, but until that day no one was brave enough to accept the challenge except for her husband who always stepped forward as her assistant.
However, there was a volunteer that time, and it was the Kaiser himself. He was the last person which Annie expected to volunteer for this dangerous shooting act, but she had no choice and invited him onto the stage. She knew that he was one of the most powerful men in Europe and that his life was in her hands. She raised her Colt .45 while Kaiser placed a cigar in his mouth and she pulled the trigger.
She blew away the ashes right off the Kaisers cigarette. Had the bullet hit him instead of the cigarette placed in his mouth, the event would have changed the course of the history. Later, the young Kaiser played a major role in launching World War I.
My great Grandfather was in the same orphanage as Annie Oakley in Greenville, Ohio.
Phoebe Ann Mosey, later known as Annie Oakley was a great lady from Ohio. Her family was poor, and she earned money by hunting, and selling her kill to local hotels. Then traveling sharpshooter Frank Butler came to town and challenged all comers to a match. The locals bet on Phoebe, and she beat Frank. After that, he wouldn’t give up until she agreed to become Mrs Frank Butler. So the Irving Berlin song was mistaken: you CAN get a man with a gun, if you shoot like Phoebe. When Annie was appearing in the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show in NYC, she and Frank lived in Nutley NJ, and Annie is a member of the Nutley NJ Hall of Fame.
My mother’s mother was a friend of the family and so my mother wore Annie’s broach from her Queen Victoria command performance as her ‘something borrowed’ on her wedding dress. They were all Ohioans.
Annie,
Thanks.
