Would like to get a cat, but my husband is allergic to them. Purina has a new cat food that is supposed to reduce allergens, and I read that female cats and ones with longer hair are less likely to cause allergies. I found one at a local shelter that fits that description. She is supposed to be a real sweetheart.
However, I could not handle trying it out and then having to give the cat up. Might be more likely to give the old goat up, if you know what I mean.
Thoughts?
Siberian Forest cat produces less of the protein that cause pet allergies.
While no cat is hypoallergenic, Siberian Forest Cats are the closest. My wife is very allergic but no problems with our Siberian Forest cat. Also the best temperament of any cat I have ever been around.

My wife loves cats. I’m allergic to them. Guess who she loves more? It ain’t the cats.
I’m allergic but did not discover it until we already had a couple and family was very attached to them. I did the shots for a while but weaned myself off of those. I take a Zyrtec every night (but it’s not just for cats). I seem to have no issues with the one that doesn’t shed much, and a few problems if I let the one that sheds a lot get up in my face. Keeping our bedroom door helps a lot. If he’s not severe, and you get a cat that doesn’t shed much, he might be fine.
If you don’t mind making your husband miserable
Yes, it’s possible. Not sure how advisable it is. Only your doctor knows.
I did it for 20 years. My symptoms were a little different than most, coughing rather than runny nose and sneezing. Seem to have gotten through it okay.
Get a chihuahua and train him/her to use a littler box. We did with Bambi. It is easier to train a female chihuahua to a box that a male.
There are other pets.
How about a bird? Maybe a ferret?
Depends on how allergic.
My brother in law is allergic but he refuses to give up his chonker kitty.
She sits with him in his recliner watching tv.
He gets injections for allergies but I don’t know what they are.
So yes...but there are caveats depending on the severity of the allergy.
If you love your husband, DO NOT get a cat.
If you DO NOT love your husband, get the cat.
Oh I sure wish you all the luck in the world finding a furbaby you can live with.
Being without a pet feels so lonely sometimes.
Well, think of how many years you’ve spent with your husband?
If he ends up being allergic and the changes mentioned by others doesn’t help, he’s had his fair share of time and it’s time to move on :)
Do you have a shed? The hubby could live out there :)
IF worse comes to worse, you’ll just have to return it. Do you remember where you got your husband? :)
I have a little cat buddy. What a life he has.
Seriously, I hope all the suggestions help and I bet if you get one, things will work out.
Yes!
Search lamination under Google Local.
Or Google bonsai cats
Ive had cats all my life and I have cat allergies. Of course it depends on how bad your allergies are.
I used to be allergic to cats, but took allergy shots for 10 or 15 years. Today, I have no reaction to cat serum (was just tested yesterday). I know there are various cat shampoos advertised as helping with cat allergies, certain breeds, etc. I don't know if those work, as I haven't tried them. I DO know that the shots worked, at least for me. That old wives' tale of a female cat with long hair causes fewer allergies doesn't sound like it would hold water. Longer hair would have more saliva on it.
If you can, find an allergist who has experience with helping patients alleviate cat allergies. And good luck adding this wonderful critter to your home. I couldn't be without kitties!
Siamese are supposed to have less dander.
How long have you rented from your landlord?
Offer him $10/mo more if he/she will build a fence and allow a pooch. The fence will add property value.
And for $120/yr you will be able to have the best friend in the world.
Im about ready to get another best friend after having one die on me, about 13 hrs ago.
They are invaluable...
We had this situation, and found out that there is a difference between cats — some are more allergenic than others.. Fortunately, one of our neighbors got an older kitten from a litter, and our allergic family member played with it and didn’t react. So we went over and got a sibling cat from that litter and she stayed with us for 15 years.
Small (very) dog and set up a plastic chicken wire fence in your backyard. Takes about 20 minutes Or long lead close to your back door and hook the pup to it when you let him out.
Yes in my experience. While I was away to college my parents picked up a cat or two and when I’d come home I’d sneeze and have symptoms but acclimated by the time I went back. Eventually the cats lived with me and I had no problems.
There are recommendations on this thread for toy poodles and chihuahuas. I have lived with both and liked both more than I thought I would. They are small, but they are real dogs. Neither was yappy.
