Would like to get a cat, but my husband is allergic to them. Purina has a new cat food that is supposed to reduce allergens, and I read that female cats and ones with longer hair are less likely to cause allergies. I found one at a local shelter that fits that description. She is supposed to be a real sweetheart.
However, I could not handle trying it out and then having to give the cat up. Might be more likely to give the old goat up, if you know what I mean.
Thoughts?
First no one really owns a Cat
Maybe a hairless cat? Depends if he’s allergic to the cat, or the dander on a cat. Try to avoid black leopards though. They can be dangerous and you need a permit. And they have hair.
yes. A few things:
allergies are a gut issue with YOU. drink ACV morning and night and get on a good mineral regimen, especially magnesium
feed the cat very good cat food (ie no grain) and your cat will barely shed and won’t have the dander problem that undernourished cats get
there are allergy docs out there that can treat your allergies and cure them.
All in, I’d focus on the top point
I know someone with a cat allergy who is owned by a Sphinx with no issues.
You might want to consult your hubby’s doc and maybe a vet for their opinions. :-)
I would visit my brother who has a cat, and when I returned home my friend would double over sneezing with puffy, runny eyes because I had sat on my sister’s couch and acquired cat allergens on my clothing. I’m not optimistic for you. :(
You might try fostering kittens. When young, kittens apparently don’t have the proteins in their saliva that trigger allergens - for this reason, my doctor’s office had kittens frolicking in the waiting room. I think they are allergen safe for about 6 weeks, at which point foster-families are willing to give them up because they’ve begun to climb the drapes. Adult cats usually have those proteins which trigger allergens in many. Good luck.
Ive read theres a Russian breed that does not have the allergen in its saliva of other breeds...
But Im a dog guy, so do your own research.
Even without a complete tolerance, some simple steps can make a huge difference - the most obvious is to always wash your hands after handling the cat. Most allergies are going to flare when dander contacts the eyes and mucous membranes, and the most common path for that is a rub of the eyes or nose with a dander-covered hand.
One cannot experience an allergic reaction to a cat unless one is in proximity of a cat. So the afflicted not only can own a cat, he must own a cat.
I have cat allergies. This would wreck my quality of life, health, sanity, life expectancy, relationship.
If my spouse did this to me, I wouldn’t think they didn’t care about me, I would instead think they are trying hard to hurt me and enjoy my suffering
Check out Russian Blues. I've owned 2 and my hubby with allergies had no problems.
And they are a great breed. I love them
I am allergic to cats. If they get around my face or upper body my eyes swell itch and I get hives around my face and neck. If I pet them and get cat fur on my hand I touch my face and there I go! My second wife had a cat and it worked well. I would pet the cat with my feet. The cat wanted to follow me everywhere. We occupied the same house for three years until he died. I had a dg and the dog and cat became friends also. Both animals were mature at the time.

Balinese, Siberian, Cornish Rex and Sphinx; all listed as hypoallergenic cats. Chow Chow Chow! (That means Toddle-loo and Good Luck in Cat)
How is he allergic to them? I have cats and am allergic but only if I rub my face or eyes. I have to wash my hands EVERY time I pet them.
I haven’t heard of this cat food, maybe ask a vet?
As with the whole concept of “owning” a cat, it’s all about the cat. There are breeds that are, uh, hypoallergenic, I suppose the word is. Talk to a vet, do a little research, then get a ferret instead. Ferrets are like kittens their whole lives.
I’m allergic to cats and we’ve had them as pets. I tend to get used to the dander and I’m fine as long as the cats don’t sleep on my pillow or rub on my face. The last cat we had was a stray who adopted us. He was also a stone-cold killer and there wasn’t a mouse within miles of our house. He is gone now and very missed.
Consider pets other than Cats. I have caged birds.
I am thinking about getting a snake.
start taking allergy shots. that works sometimes.
