The Wall Street Journal recently ran two pieces, one atop the other, covering how neighbors and loved ones span the gulf of divergent political beliefs. Needless to say, its a topic of particular relevance during this, or any, election season.
I teased a buddy of mine by sending it to him since I knew his wife was a supporter of Bernie Sanders, while he is generally more conservative. Let me read this jewel, haha, he replied.
I have always struggled with this dichotomy in theory.
It certainly makes for fascinating theater whenever Mary Matalin and James Carville are invited to participate in panel discussions. She made a name for herself working on both of George H.W. Bushs presidential campaigns, while he led Bill Clintons successful campaign to unseat H.W. in 1992. Theyve been married since Thanksgiving Day 1993.
Right about the time I started seeing this dynamic play out on TV, my daughters started coming into the world. How can you possibly raise children with someone whose beliefs differ so much and are so pronounced? I wondered. Ive never had to find out firsthand, as my girls mother and I are usually on the same page in that regard.
How can I relate to someone who condones the (excessive) taxation of someones work efforts? Whats the key to civility with someone who hires another to reach into my pocket to spend better than me?
Sometimes its your neighbor, who happily greets and takes in your daughter from the bus stop when traffic congestion has slowed you down. You know and trust this person enough to be your childs emergency contact.
But how can I rely on someone who would vote to have my property (like say, my gun) made instantly illegal?...

"You are not the person I thought you were."
No!
In a word: NOPE. I hold my friendship to higher standards than to permit that.
No
Sorry ... I dont have morons or traitors as friends
Maybe — in an alternate universe.
This last year, the Resist movement has torn us all apart. We are in the beginning of a separation process that is ideological now, and will become more and more physical over the coming years. People are/will move to places that match their political views....
It would be hard to stay friends with someone when you are constantly thinking of ways to dispose of the body without getting caught. Just sayin’.
Not close friends.

~Easy
Why would anyone want to be friends with someone who wants to murder babies and destroy our country? Because you both like the same food? The same music?
That’s like saying “Hitler was a fine guy except for that Nazi stuff he was into.”
As far as I’m concerned, a pox on them all. Let them go found their own country somewhere and get out of ours.
No.
Any remaining relationship would have to be superficial to be civil, at best. IMHO
I have lots of democrat friends. I live in the SF Bay Area, deep in the bluest of blue areas. If I shunned democrats I’d have no friends at all.
Why?
Not much common ground with those whose views are so diametrically opposed to ours.
By any rational measure, The Donald is not Adolf Hitler reborn. And it should be clear to anyone with open eyes that Bite-me is mentally incompetent.
The point of the post is that you can. If you can have friends of other faiths, you can have good friends who disagree about political beliefs. A good friend is someone who will help you move. A friend-for-life is someone who will help you move a body. Politics has nothing to do with it.
