AOC Shares Story of How Hard It Was for Her to Buy Fresh Basil, ‘Very Illustrative’ of Racism

AOC: "I looked at this recipe and I needed basil, and I was going home and I get off the subway station and I go into the grocery store and there’s no basil, no fresh basil in the grocery store. So then I walked to another grocery store two blocks down, no fresh basil. I was very stubborn about making this recipe that evening, and I must’ve been — I must’ve walked around for an hour in our neighborhoods, visiting four or five grocery stores, and there was no basil, no fresh basil in any of them. And it just goes to show, it’s very — it’s very illustrative of the difficulties that we have in our communities in accessing fresh produce."

Basil doesn’t grow in New York in the winter. It’s shipped by airplane from California or Mexico. With the green new deal, she’ll never get fresh basil again.

Now that you mention it, I have yet to find any shitake mushrooms in any of our grocery stores-not even canned or dried and certainly not fresh. Ha.

Around here, we buy what we can afford and then we cook it. If I can’t find/afford something, then we either make do, do without, or Google search for an acceptable substitute!

Perhaps she could buy a $2.00 plant at Home Depot, Walmart, or anything nursery and grow it herself. It grows like crazy and she woo too need to search for an hour over fresh basil.

I got a spring 2019. Within a 2-3 months it was 3 feet tall. Lasted all winter. I’ve grown basil before. But this thing turned into ‘a tree’

If it was an Italian recipe wouldn’t it be cultural appropriation for a Puerto Rican girl to cook it.

Thinking of all the children who have starved for lack of fresh basil I think she has a point.

I grew so much of it one season that four years later there was still frozen basil in the chest freezer.

This is what you get when your worldview is that everything is an act of oppression against minorities and that their feelings must always be treated like objective truth. In the real world, fresh basil can be difficult to find in grocery stores in lots of places, including white communities. But reality doesn’t matter to the left.
