My company was deemed essential so we’ve been in the office the whole time. I never got to experience the isolation everyone was raving about... :/

I was quite happy working from home, the video meetings etc worked well. Till I got laid off in July now I am retired. But work from home is the future even if companies don’t like it

Right, will they reimburse employees internet access?
What about IT security? They think of that? No.

The next big balout will be commercial real estate.

“According to our survey conducted in April, a significant number of Americans who are working from home due to the pandemic reported being less productive and working fewer hours than normal. Anxiety about COVID-19, a lack of collaboration, and distractions like TV, family members, and longer breaks all contributed to this lack of productivity.

In a more recent survey, we partnered with YouGov, a recognized authority in public opinion data, and found that the majority of individuals who are working from home are eager to get back to their offices and workplaces.”

They did a survey in April mainly aimed at getting a count of how many people were working from home. They did a survey in August in order to measure how well people were faring in working from home.

A balance is good. I vote for going into the office once a month, or at most, once a week.

How do you train new hires - fresh out of college - when you telecommute?

Think of all the office romances that have been tanked.

Wifey has worked from home for years. She used to have to fly to Corporate every 8 weeks or so for meetings. Since covid, they’ve held their meetings online and it’s working. Company is saving huge amounts. No airline bills, no rental cars, no hotel bills, no per-diem. No lost time traveling.

I have gone to a totally virtual hiring program. It is a 5 step process and the new hire and I never actually meet in person.

*Resume
*General availability survey
*phone interview
*Background check and psychological survey
*Zoom face to face interview

Training takes place using screen share technology and is pre-recorded. Testing for understanding.

Our software has already been able to GPS locate employees and time on location for years. New Hires can communicate via Facetime for oddball things that come up in the field in real time, forward video to the office nearly instantaneously too.

I have had a few drawbacks where a new hire fails to complete the two week training. In which case they are terminated...again all via internet.

Personally I find the young folks very well adapted to this way of working and learning. It is often the middle age and up that have a difficult time. I have a hard time with it as it requires a great deal of trust on my part too. When I see an employee progressing through training with no questions in the first two weeks, I start to worry. I don’t care what the question is, but I just like a daily friendly communication to the office. This is where I believe we will see this ‘new normal’ run into problems as creating a team is more difficult vs. having that new person in an office setting.

As an introvert whose occupation cannot be shifted to home, I would agree and somewhat envy those whose can be.

On the other hand, an online friend has complained that “working at home” essentially means “living at work”, and where do you go to get away from it? That point also resonates with me; I can leave the factory.

The general spirit of my place of work has changed. Used to be more like a family. While there are still some good people, there is a lot of backbiting and a loss of camaraderie. I asked my boss if she would let me separate from the young woman I share an office with (using Coronavirus as an excuse, but it is really because I am tired of her constantly talking about herself and incessant need for attention). My dear boss agreed. Yes, I would welcome working from home.

I took a package from my company and retired 16 Dec 2016.

That said, I would have been extremely content to be working from home.

Someone of us folks just do better if we’re left alone.

LOL
