I’ve noticed a few people with clear plastic face masks, like for when using a grinder or weed whacker.

Are you planning to wear this Etsy gauze mask OVER a valve mask??

If so, can I ask why? Why not just wear the gauze mask?

I made a dozen of them, for friends/family....because the gauze is so EASY to breathe through.

Defy the edict to wear a mask. Simply don’t wear one. Stand up and be a patriot.

Wouldn’t the cheap disposable surgical masks meet all the requirements in CA? I haven’t had any issues with those at all. They’re simple to use and breathe in. Just toss them when you’re done. I see some people hanging them from their car rearview mirror and I wonder how many days or weeks or months they’ve been using the same dirty mask.

You don’t have to wear the mask while working out.

I bought two masks at a local store, only because I needed them to go grocery shopping. Mine are made from some kind of fiber, which I detest, because the fibers separate, and shed. The fibers tickle my nostrils and lips. I hate them, but I refuse to spend any more money for new ones. They cost me $3 each when I got them back in March or April, and they’ll have to last.

I’m pretty sure that the valve mask restriction is just in the bay area. The rest of the state is fine with them (at least that’s my understanding)

If they allow neck gaiters, do they allow bandanas? That’s what I use at my gym (in Texas). Best ‘face covering’ I could come up with and still breathe.

Is it only gyms you’re meaning? If so, and if emotions aren’t yet at the point yet of saying “Fornicate all this solid waste”, what about working out at home?

I’ve used neck gaiters from SpecOps. Mostly because I used them in Kuwait for protection in dust storms, then later for camouflage during deer season, so I had some. I fold the nylon knit over double and use a strip of paper towel between the nylon layers. Airflow is about like an N-95 mask. I keep waiting for some snowflake to complain about the military camouflage patterns.

Do not bother modifying a valved mask in any way. You will just make it noneffective and might as well just be maskless. I don’t mean for this to be a judgment on if or not to mask up. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. I want this insanity behind us.

A valved style half mask is going to take maintenance to keep its performance up to spec. The valve itself is a thin rubber like disk that is very flexible and delicate. The valve must be clean to function or there could be leak by when you inhale. Also, the cleaning must be mechanically very gentle or the disk can easily be torn or punctured.

I had to maintain certification for full and half face respirators and occasionally for SCBA as well in addition to often carrying various types of emergency escape respirators in a belt pouch. This was for working in chemical plants and refineries for the most part plus doing confined space entry. Also. I had a high end microbiological lab for about 10 years. Don’t waste $$$ on a valved mask if you are not going to use it exactly and non-modified as per manufacturer’s instructions including the maintenance.

By the way, how you check the seal on any mask is to inhale very deeply. You need to feel the mask sucking tight to the face. If you don’t feel this suction then there is an an air leak. Not good to have a leak. A leak can kill you. On the flip side, not having a seal can cause non-filtered air to escape the mask thus contaminating a sterile room or infecting a patient with your germs thus for example, you would not use a valved mask in sterile room or medical room.

The Duke University study found the valved face-masks offer greater protection for both the wearer of the mask and for other people in the surrounding area than cloth face-masks.
