Good gawd. I find it interesting if classical music is so "exclusive" then why do the Japanese and Chinese embrace it.

Strong in this one the stupidity is.

Beethoven's Fifth is a piece of music. A lot of people like it. People who don't can listen to something else. There is nothing exclusive or exclusionary about that. Orchestras can play it or not, depending on what music they think will sell tickets.

Yep. Nothing screams association with racism alike Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. That’as the first thing you see Anti and BLM decrying. But that pales compared to the anti-gayness of Beethoven’s 3rd!!

It does make sense in a way. What rapper would want people listening to Beethoven?

What are these fags babbling about ?

Just enjoy the music. Beethoven was a frigging musical genius, his work doesn’t need analyzing by these turds.

“Racism” is just the excuse these destroyers use to destroy.

Their goal doesn’t have anything to do with racial justice”.

All they want is destruction.

The problem is it takes real talent to write and preform.

So not achievable by certain groups.

I would be surprised if Beethoven ever even saw a black person. People need to stop looking for racism boogie men under every rock. Eventually no one cares.

“we’re not promoting any of the composers alive today that are trying to become the Beethovens of their day.”

What a crock of fecal matter. There are no new Beethovens out there. New composers write dissonant or minimalist crap. This is the same BS as "what makes Shakespeare any better than African oral traditions?'

Today, some aspects of classical culture are still about policing who’s in and who’s out, and it all started with Beethoven’s Fifth. When you walk into a standard concert hall, there’s an established set of conventions and etiquette (“don’t cough!”; “don’t cheer!”; “dress appropriately!”) that’s more about demonstrating belonging than appreciating the music.

This is nonsense. Coughing and cheering while a work is being performed can prevent others from even being able to hear the music. People are free to enthusiastically show their appreciation after a piece is completed or between arias if it's an opera. One can go half an hour without going nuts.

As for attire, these days it's enough to dress up just a little bit better than casual. Dark jeans, a shirt free of logos, and a pair of shoes other than sneakers will do in 99% of places these days. No formal dress needed unless it's a special gala. And even that watered down dress code is basically never enforced anymore. People with thug attire aren't kicked out.

Isn’t blasting foul language over a ghetto blaster in the hood exclusionary? It certainly excludes me and turns me off. But that is besides the point.

Music is music. I am sick of everything being viewed through a political lens.

Reminders not to cough and to dress appropriately aren’t symbols of exclusion, they’re just reminders to be polite.

This article is full of...cow poop.

Our parents brought my sister and me to many artistic events held in Chicago; musicals, ballet, plays, etc. We learned basic polite behavior at a young age.

Kids today don’t learn etiquette anymore. It’s sad, really.

If you don’t like it you must be a Facist. The opening notes are Morse code for the letter “V” and it was used to signify fighting for victory against Hitler.

Would it be too obvious to mention that Beethoven was not classical. He was squarely in the middle of the Romantic movement.
