At an unknown time on this evening in 1973, or else the early hours of the following day, Chilean putschists ushering in the Pinochet dictatorship machine-gunned folk singer Victor Jara near the Santiago stadium that today bears his name. Four days before, Chiles September 11 had seen General Augusto Pinochet topple the elected leftist government of Salvador Allende, murdering the president in his palace. (Or, go some accounts, Allende committed suicide pausing only twice to reload.). A long pall of evil settled over the country, with all the accustomed chilling familiars: disappeared people, mirrored shades, Jeane Kirkpatrick.
The day after the CIA-backed coup, popular folk singer and activist Victor Jara, a pioneer of the Nueva Cancion (New Song movement) then teaching at Santiagos Technical University, was among thousands of undesirables rounded up and packed off to a makeshift prison camp at the citys Chile Stadium a stadium Jara had performed at.*...

Chile got to avoid the fate suffered by Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, where many more have been falsely imprisoned and executed.
Pinochet is a hero in Chile.
Allende suicided. The military acted at the request if the legislature. Allende’s removal was lawful.
Jara was a commie.
Buh-bye!
-—Q)—How many communists did the Pinochet government execute?
—A)—Not nearly enough—
***topple the elected leftist government of Salvador Allende***
I remember those days! The people had had enough of Socialism. The housewives were the first, banging pots and pans together. Then the Army moved.
I still remember seeing last photos of Salvador Allende in the Presidential Palace with his military helmet on his head and his machine gun in his hand. The way so many dictators eventually end.
Salvador Allende:
1. got some major cash payments from Leonid Brezhnev
2. brought in about 10,000 operatives from Cuba and East Germany.
Managed to shoot himself in the head, multiple times, with an AK-47.
LMAO!
Wasn’t Cuba caught smuggling AK47s into Chile in “diplomatic” shipping containers?
I still think the “Tank Coup” that preceded the successful action of 9/11/73 was a probe to test public reaction before launching the real coup.
As I understand it, the CIA knew nothing of the coup until it was underway. (Which may be why it succeeded.)
One of my long-time fantasies was being elected to the US Senate and hanging his portrait, along with WS Churchill's on the walls of my office, then watching the heads of visiting Dems 'explode' upon viewing. *Chuckle*
That I don’t know. I do remember that Cuba was caught, in the 1960s, smuggling rifles into Venezuela with their crest ground off. If my memory is correct, they were Fals made in Canada.
Jara insulted the armed forces of Chile and its members and officer corps in his leftist hootnany tunes. In Latin countries that is a b ig deal, insulting another’s honor. Come the day the Army made this shit pay and pay before shooting him. Good riddance indeed.
I celebrate September 11 as the anniversary of the ouster of Chile’s red regime by General Augusto Pinochet Ugarte, who sent Castro’s and Brezhnev’s agents packing.
