The failed state is to post-modernity what the nation-state was to modernity. Its a recent development that is a hallmark of our age like a state, but incapable of exercising sovereignty over all of its nominal territory. And while it might sound a little far-fetched, the failed state isnt just coming to the West. It might already be here.

Looks like my preferred escape country (if the US becomes untenable) is relatively safe. But I’ll have an escape plan for there, too.
LOL Portugal
Close to some of the countries listed, and close to the African coast, so not ideal. But I prefer it to Central or South America.
Check out Belize............ You might like it........ It used to be called British Honduras.............
Australia or NZ!
.
There was a report some time ago that if you want to settle in NZ and are over a certain age (55?) you have to bring a large amount of money with you ($750,000?). I don’t know if Australia has any similar restrictions on immigrants.
HAHA! I don’t drink (might need to start though) so that wasn’t a consideration.
I did consider Belize, since it’s easy to get back to the US, English is the official language, the cost of living is affordable, and has a tropical climate. But I don’t even like going to Florida, so not sure I would be happy there.
It’s fourth on my options list though, with Portugal third. First option is full-timing in a travel trailer around the U.S.; second option is settling in a small town in Wyoming.
I’ve heard it said Argentina is nice. No idea how hard it would be to emigrate though.
I may have had a chance to work there many, many years ago. We just visited there last year. Nicest people in the world. Also, we visited NZ about 12 yrs ago and enjoyed. the trip.
Never looked into Argentina; I hear they have some good German beer!
Looks like they would be easier to emigrate to Argentina than even Portugal. Very low income requirement for retirees.
There’s other ways to emigrate, such as making an investment in the country. Might need to give this one consideration.
Would love to live in either, especially wherever they filmed Lord of the Rings. (Not the dismal cave where all the monsters tried to kill them, though, that’s what we’re trying to get away from.)
