Fear of COVID
Neo ^ | August 20, 2020 | The New Neo

Polls indicate that Americans are very poorly informed about COVID facts. That doesn’t surprise me, and I don’t think it should surprise anyone. A lot of people have trouble with complex scientific information, especially if there’s math involved. It doesn’t help, either, when the popular sources of information – the writers and pundits of the MSM, and/or social media – either don’t understand the information itself, or purposely present it in a skewed and/or confusing manner in order to stir up fear...It amuses me, in a bleak way, that the site reporting on this news gets it wrong, as well. Here’s the quote I’m talking about. The problem is in the third sentence – it’s actually not the risk of death that’s being reported as 80% in older people, that’s the percentage of the COVID deaths that involve older people...

Simple solution to the pandemic,,,,Make HCQ and Azithromycin OTC drugs so anyone who develops a cough and/or fever can go the nearest drug store and self medicate with the drugs along with Zinc Sulfate with correct dosage within 48 hours of symptoms and pandemic over.,,,,,instead of waiting a few days to get tested and 5 days for the results,,,,if over 60 years of age,,,,you’re dead.

Many people can’t calculate beyond simple addition or subtraction above a total sum of 100 in their heads. Most people don’t know how to do fractional computation and percentages without the aid of a calculator. Ever fewer have mathematics knowledge higher than elementary algebra and still need reference material to remind them of standard equations. I won’t even get started about advanced mathematics above trig.

The media can’t do math at all; they have interns do it all for them and are too ignorant to know if the result is correct or not. Many media pundits make up their statistics on the spot and incorrectly interpret results to make their philosophical point. I often cringe any time I see a pie chart, ratio, percentage, or any other mathematical sum on news sites or the TV because more often than not I know deep down inside it’s incorrect.

At this point, I’d settle for people using a calculator if they have to, as long as they get it right.

I don’t really care if that many people can’t get beyond trig. If we just went back to “story problems,” we could probably improve critical thinking and everyday math skills by 300%.

It is not the KungFlu but the Spirit of Fear that is the problem.

Refuse to fear. Refuse to bow. Embrace the gift of "no."

Yeah, the reporting on this study left a lot to be desired.

Joseph Goebbels turned over face down in his grave out of embarrassment for the half assed job he did in comparison to the overall media coverage of Covid-19.

Far more than 1% have been infected, with or without symptoms. The actual number is unknowable, but antibody tests shed some light on the matter.

Where can we go to see that light?

Any published β-CoVs antibody study. Are numerous now, for various sub-populations.

No, writer. It’s you who don’t understand. I understand perfectly that 80% OF SERIOUS CASES are in old people. I also understand that the transmission statistics being spread around are promising, and indicate a manageable bulk of sickness. What you don’t seem to comprehend is that these transmission rates come from a population and an economy hogtied under mitigation efforts.

If we all stopped treating COVID-19 with the respect it deserves, as you endorse, then the infection rate would skyrocket along with the serious infection rate.

There is no evidence that that is true. There is evidence that the opposite is true.

Math is not the only education needed. The author should take a course in logic before reinforcing mental health problems in in his fans.

Of course spreading a disease makes it spread. I suspect that neurotypical readers would agree, while gaslighting APD readers and their flying monkeys wouldn’t.
